dual boot issue

#1 Post by RedGreen » Tue Oct 16, 2007 9:35 pm

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, this did not seem a purely linux or XP question and I wasn't sure where it should go.

I have Ubuntu 7.10 (linux) installed in a partition and now I am trying to install XP on a different partition to dual boot. I was having trouble getting the install to recognize my hard disc, after changing the SATA setting on this laptop to compatibility. that resolved that issue. When I load up an XP pro disc it only sees an unknown partition (the one my linux install is on I think) but even when I use gparted to create an ntfs partition and that was not recognised.

I tried putting a vista disc in and booting up, it saw all the partitions on my HDD and was even able to create a partition with it but every time I click next it says the criteria hasn't been met for the install.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you want any info I left out.

Did you try the duct tape fix yet?

Reliable sources (namely Harold) tell me that duct tape can be used to fix anything! :P

Oh no, a moral dilemma, never hesitated to use duct tape on anything... But on my new Thinkpad? *scratches head*

You will probably have to install XP first, then re-install Linux.
The XP bootloader NTLDR must be on the MBR, which should be in the first partition.

Perhaps you could also use Partition Magic to 'shift' your Linux a bit away from the (let's say) first GB, then format /s the first GB and you can then put NTLDR on it. You will need to re-install Grub or LILO on the first partition.

I will play with that today then, I use gparted for dealing with partitions. At this point if I cannot get it working I will just backup my linux and restore partitions and start from scratch (windows first). What fun. /sarcasm

I ended up having to wipe everything but the restore partition. I was able to then install XP although im having a weird issue, for some reason it decided to label the HDD drive E and whenever I put in a USB drive that gets labeled C.

Any ideas how to fix that?

Go into Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.
Click on Disk Management, in there rightclick on the hard disk you want to change, and select 'Change Drive Letter and Path'.

Not sure if that works for you, because all registry stuff might be set for the E-drive as well.
In that case, either learn to live with it, or re-install on C-drive.

On my PC, W2K is on the F-drive, XP is on the G-drive.
C and D contain test- and file-data. H-I-J contain images and backups.
K-L-M are my CDRW, DVD and DVDRW-drives.
No problems whatsoever.
