Uneven illumination on a 15" LCD

#1 Post by kevinh » Sat Nov 06, 2004 4:17 pm

Hi. I just got a 15" 2378-FZU. The screen is a little brighter along the bottom. It is not really apparent with the desktop, as the taskbar hides it. But it is apparent when I play DVDs full screen. Is this normal, and is there anything I can do to fix it or minimize it?

Otherwise, the laptop looks good - no stuck or dead pixels, Thai keyboard and Sony battery.

Thanks.

Kevin

That's interesting. When I have a black background, it's noticeable on my 14 inch 2378-FVU. With any other window open though, or even when my desktop is not black or very dark, I don't notice it at all. It's definitely there though.

It's not really a bright line as yours sounds though. It's a very faint brightness that stretches up and fades as it reaches about 1/4 up the screen. The taskbar is definitely not big enough to "cover" it. It looks okay when i play DVDs also.

The lighter area only extends up about 1/4" or so, and fades out. The taskbar is high enough to cover it, so it is only visible when playing DVDs full screen. And viewing angle has an effect; higher viewing angles make it more apparent. I quess uneven backlighting is just something we have to live with, cramming an LCD into a thin laptop cover. I was just hoping there was something I could do to eliminate it. Surely, there must be some some business card trick to fix this too. Ha!

What you describe sounds like light leakage.Put on a totally black background to see if this is what it is.

Well, the Eye-Bee-M screensaver has a black background, and the lighter area is definitely apparent when the screensaver is running. Is that light leakage? And from where? Thanks, Kevin.

It's probably normal. The backlight runs along the bottom of the screen. Laptop LCDs aren't as good as bigger desktop LCDs.

That's about what I figured. Thanks.

Yep... it's completely normal to have that (the uneven lighting), unfortunately. I actually had my T42p sent in, and they had a product engineer take a look at it. The engineer said that it was normal for that to happen on that particular type of screen (my guess is the 15" flexviews?)

Actually, it's a 15" XGA (1024 x 768). But it is far more noticable than on the 14.1" XGAs I've seen. Kevin

Mine's a 14 inch SXGA+, so I guess it happens on those also.
