Urgent Printer problem!

#1 Post by Shade » Wed Oct 17, 2007 10:38 am

My USB printer (Canon LBP 2900/2900i) is giving me alot of headeck. I messed it up trying to install a TCP/IP port for network printing. So now it is not working anymore at all. I tried everything to get it working again. I tried to uninstall and install it again in every possible ways with the standard drivers and different drivers downloaded.
Nothing worked. I've tried to make a system restore to were the printer was working, but still nothing.
no matter what I do I get a connection falire and the canon software tells me to check the USB connection.
But it seems VERY unlikely that the usb cable stops working after I try to network share my printer.

I've tried ALL the obvious things to get it back working as normal, so please don't post silly answers like: "try another usb port"
This problem is VERY urgent since I really need my printer for all my work.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Uninstall the printer driver completely.
Restart the computer.
Go to the Printer and Faxes Folder.
Click on File -> Server Properties.
Click on the Ports tab.
Delete the port you tried to set up if it still exists.
(There should be no IP ports).
Reinstall the printer.

The only time I have seen that message occurs when the printer driver has not been completely uninstalled and is still tied to the port (therefore it cannot be deleted).

Be sure the printer driver is uninstalled. Make sure there are no associated printers showing up in the printer folder. Next, look for the driver in the Server Properties folder under the driver tab (prior instructions, driver tab instead of ports tab). Delete the Canon driver here.

Then reboot and try again. ... JDH

Okay.. Now its working normal again.. Thank you VERY much.
Now I just have another question.
How do i share my usb printer over the network so I just can print without turning the host machine (print server) on..?
Is it the correct way to install a TCP/IP port and check "Printer pooling" so I can use both the usb and tcp/ip port at the same time or.....?

You need a USB print server on your network to share a printer without turning on a host machine. I **hate** printer sharing with a passion and implement print servers wherever I can, including at home. Then no computer needs to be on (except for the initial setup). HP makes USB printer servers (along with regular Parallel printer servers). ... JDH

If you have an older print server with a parallel port (e.g. Netgear PS101 or PS110) you can attach USB printers with the help of these cables/adapters:
parallel female DB25 to USB A male: http://tekgems.com/Products/la-par02-db25f.htm priced at $8.49
DB25 M/M gender changer: http://www.pccables.com/cgi-bin/orders6 ... te=f.00303 priced at $2.00
USB A female to USB B male gender changer: http://www.abccables.com/305-0203.html priced at $2.95

This gives the (not so pretty) cable/adapter concoction:
- print server with female DB25
- gender changer DB25 M/M
- DB25 female part of cable to USB A male
- USB A female to USB B male gender changer
- printer with USB B female port

If you have money to burn, you could also buy a one-piece adapter parallel male to USB A female, and plug the USB printer cable into that:
http://www.lpt2usb.net/main.sc priced at $89.-
