R52 USB/PCMCIA XP Pro issues

#1 Post by dbphiladelphia » Wed Oct 17, 2007 2:01 pm

If any forum that I've found thus far can be of assistance, this clearly seems to be the one! You guys are fantastic.

Here's the scenario~

Mister R52 clotheslined me with his power cable the other night, resulting in said R52 making a flying leap to the hardwood floor. Upon restarting, some Windows files refused to load due to corruption. Long story short, I had to re-image the drive. I had no idea what to expect, since I haven't had to take such drastic action on this machine as of yet. I had previously made all my recovery disks and had them nearby, though I wasn't once prompted for any of them, as apparently all needed files were on the preboot partition- or so I thought. After quite a long day of resetting things up and downloading hundreds of megs needed to replace files that I thought should've been in the original image, I still have no USB or PCMCIA functionality. Now, I've never been familiar with the PCMCIA bus, as this is the first laptop I've ever owned, but it seems to me that it has something to do with USB, since, even though Device Manager shows the PCMCIA driver to be ok, when I plug my wireless broadband card in, it brings up the prompt to install the USB controller drivers. At current I have 6 or 7 USB drivers detected with windows only being able to install 2 of them. I've looked everywhere for drivers and solutions to no avail.

Anyone?

Thanks much! :)

new hd

After a bunch of other attempted ideas, I did a full surface scan of the HD which confirmed what I was afraid of - damaged HD. Bought a 120 GB Western Digital today and commenced to imaging. All was fine until Disc 4 was prompted. it simply states that it's the wrong disc, so I popped it into another machine and opened the .ini file in notepad- no mistake- clearly labeled as disc 4. I'll nose around in here to see if anyone else has run into this issue, but if anyone reads this and can be of assistance, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks much,
db

Disc 4? Are you using recovery media that you burned? If so I'd say Disc 4 is bad.

Disc 4

So it would seem, though it's hard to tell how, as when viewed in another machine, looks pretty much like the rest, including the .ini file. Only problem is, I don't know that these discs can be made again- at least from my machine.

Try asking on the marketplace forum for a set or R52 recovery CD's.

who'd have thunk it...

Oddly enough, even though my machine was a refurb by another company with a Hitachi HD (as opposed to an IBM drive) my machine is listed as under warranty with Lenovo, and they're now sending out a complimentary set of discs. I didn't bother to try this option due to all of those circumstances - we'll see what happens. Thanks for the responses!
