T40 Powerjack problem

#1 Post by Kurtismonger2 » Wed Oct 17, 2007 3:35 pm

First let me say I'm happy to have found this forum of dedicated Thinkpad users. I have a T40 with a loose powerjack. I disassembled the Thinkpad and found 2 of the 4 little white wires that run to it had broken (the two at the base, not at the side of the jack). I couldn't totally remove the power jack as part of the frame was in the way. From what I could see both of these wires had been attached to the same point so I soldered them back on, screwed it all back together and it seemed to work great both charging the battery and running off AC. However, if the the power adapter gets moved just so I get a pop so I obviously botched the solder job, although it seemed to continue to work fine. Now a few weeks later it will no longer take power and the battery wont charge so I think the connection broke again. Before I go back in I have two questions:

1. The 4 wires coming off the jack plug into a power bus on the motherboard, is it possible to order a replacement jack with the wiring attached? I'd rather just do that then continue to mess around with it. Is there a technical manual available on how to replace the whole jack assembly?

2. Or can anyone direct me a wiring schematic so I can tell if there are supposed to be two contact points and how the wires get attached? Its pretty close quarters working in this spot and extremely difficult to solder so close to the motherboard.

Thanks,
Kurtismonger

The wires come attached to the jack. The jack cannot be bought separately. It comes as part of some sort of Misc. parts kit. Anybody who repairs T40x thinkpads has some around. You need to remove the motherboard completely from the base and take off the frame. If you can do PayPal, I can sell you one, but you need to send me a private message.

I have them ORIGINAL IBM used and new without or with the KIT...

PM me and I can send you more information...on the part or kit...

It has been a while since I dissasembled the T4X series but I think you have to dissasemble the "frame" and there is one screw that holds the jack in place (top or bottom) make sure to download the HMM from the Lenovo website if you are not sure on how to take the unit apart...
