Is this worth? 15" UXGA T42p 2.1GHz, 1GB Ram, under war

#1 Post by bin.dong » Thu Oct 18, 2007 1:23 pm

This is eBay item but it's in the same location as I am right now. It looks like the same as I have but I wanna have another one. I am not sure it's worth that much or not (still under IBM warranty)? If I pay several hundred more, I may have a T61 but I really like the original IBM design, especially windows key free. Suggestions?

Here is the eBay URL for it:

Very borderline...

An excellent-looking machine at a high-end price.

If that's what you really want, I'd say go for it. And make sure you extend the warranty until Kingdom Come...

T6 series are going to be around for a while, but UXGA FlexView machines are a wonderful thing of the past...unfortunately so in my opinion.

Good luck.

I am not sure. I have a same one already, but I just like it. This why I asked people on this forum it's worth or not.

A month or 2 back I paid $900 for basically the same machine with a few months warranty left if that helps you any. I have to tell you though that the seller was from this forum and I knew the machine looked and ran like new. The other thing is that the T42/P is by far my favorite Thinkpad for many reasons, so I was willing to pay extra for a perfect specimen (entirely sentimental and not practical, but hey you have to be passionate about some things or you're not alive). I'd be less apt to trust an EBay seller with that kind of coin. :)

This does look in nice shape for it's vintage.

I would imagine and it does appear that these UXGA equipped ThinkPads will no longer be sold new. So a functional example in fairly nice condition will only become more rare as time passes.

For those UXGA enthusiasts such as George, Harry, and myself as well as others here maybe having a spare isn't such a bad idea since these will become as raer as hen's teeth.

A simple warranty check at the Lenovo website reveals the following:

Our apologies

Information for Warranty was not found. Please click back and try again or you may navigate clicking on 'Warranty'.

This may have something to do with where this ThinkPad was purchased. If it were me and there were other similary configured ThinkPads I would look there.

I was actually able to pull the warranty info, and it's in warranty until 02/26/08...

As usually, Brad is on the money with his observations. FlexView-equipped machines are going to become like certain classic cars, but unfortunately, I can't see anyone re-manufacturing this type of screens...so get it while you can, and while there are enough non-abused examples to choose from, even if one has to pay a premium price...my $0.02 only...

This T42p is still in warranty, and is covered by IWS

Checking the warranty status via Warranty Lookup with Type = 2373 and Serial number = 99NX4BM states: Expiration data = 2008-02-26 and Location = United States (if you wish to check for yourself, look here).

T42/p's of the 2373-series are eligible for International warranty service (IWS), so the warranty should cover in Canada.
IBM T42p's (2373-Q1U & -Q2U): 2.1 GHz, 15" UXGA FlexView, 2 GB RAM, 128 MB FireGL T2, 128 GB 1.8" SATA SSD, IBM a/b/g, BT, Win 7 Ultimate
IBM T42 (2373-N1G): 1.8 GHz, 15" SXGA+ FlexView, 2 GB RAM, 64 MB Radeon 9600, 64 GB 1.8" SATA SSD, IBM a/b/g, BT, Win 7 Ultimate

a bit more info

Here's the auction where it was purchased:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0163246996

Looks like he "upgraded" the hard drive to 80gb (most likely 5400, the original 60gb 7200 is faster), and pulled out some RAM, then jacked up the price. Also, I don't see any mention of bluetooth in the original ad, may be worth asking about...

Read the fine print: 6 mos IBM + 3 years MACK which is next to useless...
