Facebook is such a great way to stay in touch with friends. After getting an account, I stopped using Friendster.

Facebook is a toned down version of myspace. I have both, but prefer the professional look of facebook. ALTHOUGH facebook has been adding nonsense applications and options that doesnt make it much different from myspace.

IMO, Myspace caters to teenagers, Facebook to college students, and Friendster to older people. I am among the oldest people on Facebook!ThinkPad wrote:Facebook is a toned down version of myspace.

Re: Do you have a Facebook profile?
I have successfully stayed away from Facebook, although I understand many of its benefits. The thing that gets to me is that it is becoming essentially a tabloid for the masses. Photos of you and your mistress are no longer sacred,
. You can post and share some pictures sure, but the whole tagging photos bit is where it gets out of control.

Re: Do you have a Facebook profile?
you can very well control your privacy. all you have to do is not write anything except for your name and make it private and not foundable over facebook. then you get your friends from your email and you share whatever you like to share. facebook just makes it easier to share pictures, news, etc... over the internet. it does not imply that you have to share everything with everyone over the net.ajkula66 wrote:

Re: Do you have a Facebook profile?
I couldn't agree more with "I like my privacy" just like George wrote...
Although I can understand social network benefits, the "price" of disclosure from my point of view, can give me more problems than I could ever benefit from such concept...
Although TP group is really nice idea, my social network is in my phone book/e-mail address list (and forums like this)...
And I don't like idea of tagging and pictures sharing with people that I said hello few times (talking about people you actually met in person)...

Re: Do you have a Facebook profile?
I think the point in social networking sites is exactly the social networking... If we have to talk about privacy or conspiracy,[conspiracy] nobody is actually interested in one´s wedding photos... What is of interest are one´s true name and one´s contacts/connections. Even if one doesn´t create an account with his real name, judging by all other members linked to one you would be able, with great probability, to figure out who stays behind the nick. The more the network grows, the simpler it gets for them (yup, not the other way around)... Not by a chance, one of the founders of facebook is a former CIA... These people seem to never get out of the business :sigh: [/conspiracy]
Apart from that, I think it´s nice idea to have sort of facebook representation of our forum. In the end, it´s all matter of one´s paranoia levels...

Sorry, no. The moment I put it in is the moment that someone somewhere knows I'm on Facebook, and the IP address that I've joined it from. I've done an excellent job so far of protecting my identity and am intent on keeping things that way...all you have to do is not write anything except for your name and make it private and not foundable over facebook.

well if you don't want anyone knowing your IP address and associating that addrss with a facebook acount you can simply use a library computer to join a facebook acount. or you can hide your IP address and join a facebook acount. either way you can enjoy the full benefit of facebook without sacrificing your privacy.ajkula66 wrote:

To make a long story short, and myself perfectly clear: I have absolutely zero interest in joining Facebook. Most of my friends worldwide are not on it, and vast majority of them will never be. I still write old-fashioned letters and talk to them on the phone. As much as these means of communication can be monitored as well, I've got decades worth of practice in not saying anything that I wouldn't want the third parties to know...and still getting my point across.
This is not to say that I don't understand the reasons why people join Facebook. To each his/hers own. Enjoy and stay safe...but I want no part of it. Not now, not ever.

Re: Do you have a Facebook profile?
Trouble is, you often don't understand the process until it's too late. Some friends of mine badgered me into signing up on Facebook, saying I need to "get up to speed with current technology". I figured, what the heck, and signed up. I immediately got all kinds of people I hadn't seen in decades coming out of the woodwork sending me friend invites. Some were great to hear from, others....well, I'd just as soon not. /shrugmattbiernat wrote:you can very well control your privacy. all you have to do is not write anything except for your name and make it private and not foundable over facebook. then you get your friends from your email and you share whatever you like to share. facebook just makes it easier to share pictures, news, etc... over the internet. it does not imply that you have to share everything with everyone over the net.
I'm at the point now where I have to either accept their invite and any subsequent interaction attempts from them, or reject their friend invite, thereby offending them (wouldn't really break my heart, but I'd just as soon not hurt anyone's feelings or play a part in *any* possible drama that might ensue). I basically have to tell people to get off my lawn when, though they don't mean any harm, they really have little to no reason to contact me in the first place. It's like junk mail, really. You're hitting up everyone you know for correspondence. Some people just crave the false validation they get by merely having a gazillion friends on Facebook, I guess.
Me, I'm still trying to see its merits past all the banality.
