I AM SO HAPPY WITH MY THINKPAD !!!

No matter its minor flaws, I´ve come to the conclution that my T60 is one of the best notebooks running on here, and because of that I will stay with the brand until its quality standars start to decline. Sometimes we demand an absolute level of perfection that doesn´t exist, and the failure to achieve it somehow bothers us, I think it is healthier to enjoy what we have... what do you think folks?

I am happy with my Thinkpads as long as I don't have to carry them around. I have been living in NYC since Sep 29th. The laptop I've brought with me is the 5.05-lb 14.1" UXGA T42 (with travel bezel instead of optical drive), and I've been lugging it to and from work everyday. Even when this laptop and its 0.80-lb adapter are the only things in my backpack, it still feels way too heavy. This morning, I walked around the Columbia U. campus and Broadway for about an hour with this T42 in my backpack. That was about two hours ago, and my shoulders still hurt.

I used to like the X series because of its portability but ever since I started using laptops with 1400x1050 or higher res, I can't tolerate 1024x768 any more. Lenovo needs to increase the X series resolution to at least 1280x800.

It seems to me that very few people are happy with Thinkpads or that most of this forum users only see the negative side of the coin, I wonder what would be the reason for this behaviour?

You probably do not hang around hardware or software forums much. The fact is that very few people go to them to praise the product, but mainly seek out the forums when they are having problems. In that case an abundance of negativity here makes sense right? The other side of the coins says that the vast majority of Thinkpad owners, most of whom are happy with their machines, do not know this forum exists.

To me, the best thing about Thinkpads is their affordability. I treat my laptops very nicely, so durability doesn't matter to me very much. I don't own a Panasonic Y7 or a Toshiba Portege R500 (both of which I would prefer to Thinkpads) simply because they cost way too much.

The T-series and R-series Thinkpads are the best desktop-replacement laptops that I can afford. However, in the "ultraportable" category, IBM/Lenovo has nothing that suits my needs, so I opted for the HP nc2400, which is the best ultraportable laptop that I can afford.

I agree with the original poster and with pianowizard. I've owned 3 different Thinkpads over the last 7 years or so - an A21m, R40 and, within the last week, an X61. I haven't had to break the bank for any of them (actually the R40 was the most expensive new) and all have been highly customizable over their lifetimes (although not much to do with this X as this point).

But it's the quality and belief that they will last that keeps me coming back to Thinkpads each time I want/need a new machine. I didn't even really consider another brand when I was shopping for a light weight dual core machine as I've wanted an X series machine for a long time. Maybe that was short sighted or foolish, but I seriously doubt I'd have gotten anywhere near as good a deal for a quality built machine from any other manufacturer as for this X61.

You do realize, that you could get both of the above if you gave up some of the 7 laptops in your signature, of which I hardly believe you need all.

I think he's said in the past that he does use them all (the R50p's with identical setups with one at his work place and the other at his home - I may be wrong though). Plus the bottom half are desktop machines if I'm not mistaken.

FWIW, I travel daily with my 15" T42 to and from work in my backpack (I do walk about half a mile from a train station to my workplace as well) and have no issues with the weight of the laptop.

Wow, thanks for remembering what I wrote a long time ago!

You're right, one R50p is at home and the other in my office, and I use both on a daily basis to do work-related stuff.

The Dell desktop is my main "entertainment" machine, and I watch DVDs and play music on it. Movies look great on its 24" 2407WFP monitor.

The T42 is in my office and I use it in conjunction with my R50p quite often. I run lots of programs in parallel and running all of them on the R50p would slow things down a lot.

The HP nc2400 is my lightest laptop and I travel with it.

The remaining three computers are actually in my mom's home in Texas and I use them for only several weeks a year. When I visit her, I use the Packard Bell (which has Windows 95) to play a few very old DOS games, and use the Sony laptop for everything else. The eMachines desktop rarely gets used, but I wouldn't get much money if I sold it, so I decided to just keep it. It's good to have a backup machine anyway.

I used to walk about 2 km to work with my R40 (2.62 kg plus power supply - I actually weighed it out of curiosity) and as long as I had it in a backpack, it was fine. As soon as I had it in a shoulder bag (like most laptop bags), it became really annoying. That is the main reason I got myself an X series as well - I can can carry it all day in a shoulder bag and it doesn't bother me.

I can totally identify with you.

Among my adjusted laws of physics is a law that states that a laptop in a backpack doesn't weigh anything.

By that I mean, that the weight of the backpack itself, combined with any other items in it make the weight of the laptop itself quite irrelevant, at least to the point tha the difference in weight between a 12" and a 15" becomes negligible. In a shoulder bag - it's something else.

I used to carry my 15" T42 to work with me, and now I carry a 14" T60. In a backpack - no problem. I used to get annoyed after carrying the T42 in a shoulder bag for a while (and it was a very slim, compact and lightweight shoulder bag).

I hate shoulder bags/carry cases though - just doesn't help the walking posture, whilst with the backpack it's more or less evenly balanced.

It has a higher resolution, an optical drive, better build quality, superior keyboard, etc

Please see my review of the HP nc2400.

Many people aren't aware of the fact that HP's "business" laptops are far superior to their "consumer" laptops, in terms of both hardware and customer service. This nc2400 is a business laptop.

I've regularly carried the 701, various 600s, all of the Ts some of the Rs and most of the As on occasion as well as some of the Xs. I've come to the same conclusion as some of you that a backpack greatly balances out the load, but on many occasions, backpacks are not feasible. I've also come to the conclusion that the bag itself and the strap plays a big role in comfort. A lot of bags are fine in and of themselves, but the strap isn't up to snuff. For me the old IBM sold Port bags have been great and with the metal frame, provide great security. They are a great deal on the used market as well.

What are the flaws that you notice? For mine, I dislike the heat that gets on my palms whenever I type - R40 w/ centrino

But I like how I can type uber fast on the keyboard. The keyboard tires out, though, about 1/2 hour into typing.

Minor flaws to me are the screen low brightness and contrast, weight, (not into a backpack of course...), rubber finish on the lid, hard to maintain (borders peeled), an overall outfashioned appearance, (who said business people always dress in black?). However the build quality, continuous failproof performance, quiet, almost silent ventilator, excellent heath dissipation which means cool work environment, extraordinary NMB keyboard and last but not least software update that have no par ... those are the facts that make me feel happy with my Thinkpad.
