T-Series long fan question

#1 Post by tim S » Mon Oct 22, 2007 12:59 pm

A quick question.
Is it safe to assume that all T40 T41 and T42 models were made with a short fan, while the T40p, T41p and T42p with 64meg video ram were made the the long fan?

Tim:

No guesswork or assumptions is actually necessary on this matter; if you check the check the Hardware Maintenance Manual you'll find specific information. Alternatively, go to the Service parts list index - ThinkPad and look up the ThinkPad you want to know more about.

Best regards,

Johan

On the same topic of fans...

Is it alright to use a T4x series long fan in a T40 that has a short fan?

Yes, I'm doing that now.

use M24 Long fan from T43,
stronger cooling effect.

To simplify, the long fan is meant to assist with cooling the GPU, but probably has residual cooling effects on other components, too.

-> all T40, T41, T42's with 32MB 7500 ATI GPU had short fan
-> all T40, T41, T42's with 32MB 9000 ATI GPU or above had long fan
-> long fan will work on any T4x
-> the most recent version of the long fan from the high end T43's is considered the best to use

Note: Many people with 32MB 7500 ATI GPU motherboards have upgraded their CPU's to faster Dothan models and have kept their short fans without ill effect. However, the argument that for $20-$25 you should upgrade to the long fan for the best protection, is hard to refute.

What is the FRU number of the M24 fan ?
Any drawbacks, power consumptions etc ?

Where should I buy it? I'm living in Denmark.

Any difference between the Long fan between a "low end" T43 and a "high end" T43?

I have a < 1 year old T43 here, it has an X300, so it's not high end, and the fan is atrocious. It's so bad, that sometimes when it makes weird sounds, they go away if I press down on the left side of the laptop.

Regards.
