PC3200 on T42?

#1 Post by oversky » Mon Oct 22, 2007 7:28 pm

Is it possible to use PC3200 or PC5300 ram on T42 (PC2700)? These ram are all sodimm, so I think they should be pin compatible.

Nowadays PC5300 is much cheaper than PC2700.

PC5300 (and any DDR2) will never work. Fortunately they have notches in different places so you can't put it in accidentally and fry something.

PC3200 should scale down to pc2700 and work, you just won't get the extra speed.

PC3200, yes. PC5300 (I would assume it's PC2-5300), no. PC3200 is simply a little bit faster DDR memory. PC2-5300 is DDR2 memory and is not compatible with the older DDR design. And they are NOT pin compatible. Yes, they both have 200 pins but there's a small notch in the edge of the module which prevents installing the wrong type of memory.

Thank you all for these useful information. Now I can add PC3200 to to shopping list.
