Bootup delay with Comodo Firewall 2.4.18.184

After testing Jetico's firewall for a couple of days, I removed it and installed Comodo Firewall Pro. Unlike Jetico, Comodo allows a fingerprint logon to Windows in conjunction with Client Security Solution 8.0. (I was never able to configure Jetico to allow a fingerprint-based logon; it would allow logon only by typing in the Windows password.)

The only significant issue I am having with Comodo's firewall is the rather substantial increase in boot time. It takes about 3-4 minutes for the fingerprint swipe prompt window to appear. Then my T43 loads Windows quickly and the system tray is completely populated within about 45 seconds.

A related post (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=48496) mentions adding a number of DLL components related to CSS and Windows system files to the firewall's "Allow" list to enable the Password Manager to populate logon and password fields in Web forms. (My installation of Comodo does not interfere at all with fingerprint logon for Web pages.)

Does anyone know if adding these DLL/System components (referenced in the post above) would reduce the boot time on a T43 with the latest version of Comodo Firewall Pro installed on it? Or would delaying the startup of Comodo Firewall by modifying its command string syntax in the startup folder be the only other option? (I also recently installed Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0.0.125, and it is working well on my system with no known issues or conflicts with Comodo.)

Several months ago I installed Comodo Firewall Pro 2.4.18.184 on my T43 (with XP SP2). It has worked perfectly and there is no delay when booting. Maybe you need to uninstall it, run a program to clear up registry errors (TuneUp works well) and then reinstall Comodo.

What a difference 12 hours makes...I booted up this morning and the system segued straight to the fingerprint swipe window. However, the delay now occurs during the "Authenticating User" process during logon. Since the firewall's "Component Monitor" is still in Learning Mode, I suspect that various DLLs and OCXs are being scanned, analyzed and approved by the firewall before they are processed.

Guess it will all settle down after a couple more bootups. If so, I'm replacing Outpost Firewall with Comodo on my desktop system as well.

USSS, Good to hear it is working better now. It's probably still worth doing a clean up of your registry. :)

Killer, I'm still experiencing protracted delays on bootup with Comodo Firewall Pro. After trying to enroll various DLLs and executables as trusted applications to no avail, I've submtted a help request over on the Comodo forum.

Does your ThinkPad have a fingerprint reader and, if so, do you use it to logon to Windows?

My Event Viewer is showing errors during startup that are associated with Application Gateway Layer (alg.exe), Roxio Upnp Server 9, and DCOM server, whose services failed to start because they did not "respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Another error associated with ThinkVantage Technologies (TVT) Backup Service says it failed to start because "the system cannot find the file specified."

Any insight would be appreciated. And yes, I always run jv16 PowerTools after installing or removing an application.

Long boot times are often caused by Windows trying to acquire a network or internet connection. For a test, you might try uninstalling Access Connections and using Windows to manage your wireless connection. You will need the Wireless Zero Configuration service running. Make sure your adapters are set up to allow Windows to manage them.

GomJabbar, thanks for the tip.

I think I have traced part of the problem back to two weeks ago, when I partitioned my hard drive for the first time. I moved most of the IBM/Lenovo applications onto "E:\ Program Files" from Drive C, using a program called Application Mover.

Unfortunately, some of the paths to certain Rescue & Recovery services (rrservice.exe and rrpservice.exe) were not properly modified in the process. If those services don't load within specific times (either 2 or 3 minutes), they time-out, and then Windows proceeds to load.

I uninstalled CSS 8.0, R&R 4.1 and Fingerprint Software 5.6 last night, and the machine booted up very quickly this morning. So I will be reinstalling all of them onto Drive C today in hopes of resolving this issue.

Glad to hear you think you might have found the cause ... and therefore the solution. Let us know if it works. :)

Meanwhile, for the record, my T43 has a fingerprint reader and, yes, I do you use it to log on.

System is fixed and working.

It was not pretty (virtual mud wrestling comes to mind), but reinstalling CSS, R&R, and FPS and then Comodo Firewall Pro seemed to fix the slow bootup issue.

Apparently some of the critical IBM/Lenovo applications work better when installed on the same drive as Windows. I did encounter considerable difficulty trying to re-establish my DSL connection (it would connect, but was unable to access the Web) and thought perhaps my TCP/IP protocol/stack had become corrupted. Anyway, rebooting my hardware router and DSL modem several times resolved that problem.

Back in business...thanks again for the support, folks.
