X61s network adapter

#1 Post by Charles Krug » Tue Oct 23, 2007 1:08 pm

I work in a small office which has an antiquated network using 10MB half-duplex hubs over plain old telephone wiring. Until now this hasn't been a problem, but the X61s I just purchased for our vp sales cannot make a connection. If the adapter (Intel 82566MM gigabit) is changed from auto detect to 10HD, still no luck. Connection is good when hooked up to the 100MB switch used as a server backbone.
Can't connect wirelessly either, perhaps because the access points are fed by the same 10-HD.
The user finally resorted to his EVDO card. Although he only comes by once a month, this was a frustrating experience.
Anybody know of a way to force a connection? Thanks,
Jim

Repeater

I would replace the repeaters. Since it is a small office, I assume your port count is low.

Get a 16 port switch. You will get 10 / 100 speeds. With CAT3 wiring, you are guaranteed to get 10 Mbps, but if the runs are short, there is a good chance you will get 100 Mbps connections.

From your description, the problem is definitely with the Repeater. So replace it. I am sure the other users in the office will appreciate it too.
