Adding Bluetooth to A31p

#1 Post by RWDPLZ » Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:43 pm

I finally recieved my brand new Microsoft Bluetooth mouse and keyboard for my PC, so I decided to finally get the bluetooth function of my A31p working. This was done with an A31p 2653-R8U with the following modifications:

Added internal wireless antennas
Intel 2915ABG wireless card
2GB PC2700 RAM (2 x IBM FRU 31P9835)
100GB Hitachi 7200 rpm hard drive

Adding Bluetooth to an A31p:

Parts needed
-Bluetooth Daughter card (IBM FRU 12P3872)
-Bluetooth Antenna (IBM FRU 27L0685), or I used a generic Hitachi antenna from eBay
-Clear Plate for A31p (IBM FRU 46L5024), adds the Bluetooth button and logo to LCD lid
-Download Bluetooth Software from Lenovo

Refer to the Hardware Maitenence Manual for detailed installation instructions.

My A31p didn't come with bluetooth so I decided to add it so I could use a bluetooth mouse. I replaced the modem daughter card with the bluetooth daughter card I purchased on eBay. I also bought the generic Hitachi antenna since I didn't want to pay $25 + shipping for an original A31 one, and since there haven't been any on eBay for as long as I've been looking.

I lucked out and the replacement LCD I bought for the A31p came with a bluetooth clear plate, which already has the button to turn the bluetooth function on and off.

Once the daughter card is installed, I installed the IBM software and restarted the computer. Now when the bluetooth button is pressed, I can use my new mouse.

This may also work with some A31's with the SXGA+ IPS panels, since some use the same inverter as the UXGA screen and have the bluetooth button.

Nice job, but now you no longer have the modem working, since you removed the modem daughter card.

There are modem/bluetooth daugther cards available. I have tried several of them, but could not get the drivers for the modem to work.

Now I just use a Ultraport Bluetooth adapter on the A31P when I need bluetooth, this way I can still send faxes with my modem.
The issue that I still have is that I still get 'internet explorer script error' when I open 'my bluetooth places'.

Yeah a working modem would be nice, but I haven't needed one since 2001.
