cloning boot partition from a T41

#1 Post by ChugokuOtaku » Thu Oct 25, 2007 1:35 pm

Not sure if another thread had already addressed this, so please point me in the right direction

I'm somewhat of a new thinkpad user, so only recently began playing around with a few.

I was upgrading a T41 to a different harddrive yesterday, couldn't find my ghost disk, so I used Partition magic 8 instead. I hooked up the newer harddrive with a USB adapter to the T41, set partition magic to copy the OS partition to the new harddrive. Windows rebooted, PM completed the batch, rebooted again, came up showing that it sees two XP installations present. So I thought all is well, since I've done this across 3 other machines the same way before, I powered it down, installed the newer harddrive into the T41, powered it back up. And then it doesn't boot to windows. Is copying the boot partition any different from Ghosting the drive? I've used PM as an alternative to Ghost in quite a few occasions, and never had this problem before.

Also, I did a clean install of XP Pro to a Thinkpad T22 a week ago. I pulled the harddrive out and hooked it up to another desktop to clone a data partition. Windows disk management saw the disk fine, but when I proceeded to clone the partition from my desktop via Partition Magic, it saw the entire harddrive as "BAD". No partitions were detected.

I will soon get my x60 Tablet with XP tablet installed, and I'm planning on upgrading it to a Travelstar 7K200. Should I ghost as I normally do, or are there additional steps I should be taking?

You can take a look at the following thread in FAQs of this forum: Hard Drive Cloning HOW TO
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.
