BartPE likes 600, hates 600X?

I run a tweaked out version of 98SE on my Thinkpads. Still the use of XP related stuff comes in handy from time to time so I have been toying with that via a BartPE disk that I have. It is built on XP1 French language edition and fires up perfectly, if slowly, on my 600 with 128 meg of ram. But, mysteriously, it won't work with my 600X with 400+ meg of ram. The OS simply stops booting halfway through the process. My initial suspicion was that my CD/DVD burner in the 600X was the problem. So I switched over to the CD player from the 600 and ran into the same error. So what, I ask you, is going on?

Thanx,
