MS Bluetooth and Lenovo Bluetooth

On my X60s, when I did factory reinstall, the BT software was very elaborate and there were several virtual devices and a BT network neighborhood concept.

When I went on to put all MS updates online, there was another icon by the name of Bluetooth Devices that is not as elaborate but there are things common such as adding device and playing with discovery modes.

This is confusing, having two software for one piece of hardware with duplicate functions. So I uninstalled BT software from Add/Remove section thinking I am getting rid of the MS update and found out the TP software got deleted.

Questions:

1. How do I uninstall the BT software that came with MS updates?
2. Why are there two software pieces, one from MS update site and one from Lenovo site or service partition?
3. How do you put the Lenovo BT software of course without going through the service partition. I downloaded 7jba08ww.exe and all it did was unzipped everything in C:\DRIVERS\TPBTooth and when I uninstalled bluetooth device from Device Manager, turned off bluetooth, turned it back on, by default Windows XP picked up MS drivers and didn't ask me, so I couldn't point to the Lenovo drivers above.

3. Change the setting for Windows update, make it manual. You'll need to go to C:\DRIVERS\TPBTooth to install the package.

FYI, when you download software from IBM/Lenovo's site, running the file usually extracts it's contents to a specified directory on your hard drive - as you discovered. Generally you need to run setup.exe from that directory to actually install the software. There are a couple of exceptions, so it is always a good idea to look over the readme file for the package that is available from the same download page before trying to install the software.

I went into Device Manager and selected the BT devices and uninstalled them.

Then I went into \WINDOWS\INF folder and renamed BTH.INF and BTH.PNF to .OLD extensions.

Then I restarted the computer and when I saw the Found New Hardware popup, I went into the \DRIVERS\TPBTooth folder and ran the SETUP.EXE program.

After the Lenovo software was installed, the popup went away on its own. Before I restarted the PC, I re-renamed the two files to INF and found that MS BT software doesn't get picked up any more.

Good, except that there are still two icons in the Control Panel. I renamed the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bthprops.cpl to .old extension but upon restarting, the file is recreated with the .old file sitting, both cannot be deleted, so there should be a registry entry to handle.

9. Now everything was working properly except that I had a stray "Bluetooth Devices" icon in Windows Control Panel (there were two- the old one and the new one "Bluetooth Configuration").

10. I deleted the registry keys that referenced btprops.cpl.

11. I booted up into Safe Mode and deleted the following (4) leftover Microsoft bluetooth files from C:\Windows\System32\ (I could not do it in Normal Mode as they kept recreating themselves).

I didn't try the method GomJabber proposed but I believe it should work. I went on to see how I can enable this X60s with an upgrade of Windows Vista Business.

So far so good. I will sometime post on the Vista forum my findings and experiences with the OS.
