Missing 5GB space on the HDD ?

#1 Post by wearetheborg » Sat Oct 27, 2007 5:46 am

I have a clean install of Xp pro on my R50. 12.5GB is consumed. But when I went into to C: directory and individually counted up trhe disk space of each directory, it only came to about 5.5GB.
2GB is swap space, so total is 7.5GB

Where is the missing 5GB ?

It cannot be the recovery partition, as the C: drive is only showing 52.5GB, so I assume the hidden partition is outside of it.

What is the drive capacity as listed by the manufacturer? Try this utility (treesize free), it might show you a clue -

NTFS uses roughly that amount of space for it's file system. You probably have a 60GB hard disk from the above info.

Also some manufacturers give a MB as 1000 instead of 1024KB.
Using the 1000, or multiples thereof, it looks better on paper but it's really 'cheating'.

Thanks. Look at the picture in the link.
What does [Files] denote ? On my system, that is where the missing 4Gb is going.

Oh, and the HDD size is 60GB, but that should be another matter. What I'm concerned about is that C: has 12.5 GB used space, and I could only count about 8GB used.
Now it seems [Files] is using the rest.

I'm guessing hidden files.

Man, 12.5 GB for a windows install, and I dont have many programs installed either. This is way too much.

Even on my bloated Linux SLED-10 install with all sorts of window managers, browsers, compilers, jdsk, editors, open office, its taking 8GB including swap space.

Here is a really cool utility that creates a map of the hard drive in block form.
I found this on another site when I was addressing a similar issue on my Averatec 3220. I had consistently disappearing disk space... In large bites on a daily basis.

With this utility, I found the source and corrected it. It ends up that I had inadvertantly and unknowingly allowed a third party software install, and EVERYTHING I did on my pc was recorded in a hidden "diagnostics" file. Nothing was ever uploaded as far as I could tell, but I was able to nip it.

Excellent utility for the software toolbox.

joester, thanks, thats a smoking utility.

It solved my missing HDD issue. Apparently pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys were each taking up 2GB of space.

I resized pagefile, and deleted hiberfil

I support that idea. 8)

I have another minor problem.
After getting rid of hiberfil and pagefile.sys files, I defragmented.
Now, the HDD looks like
xxxxxxxxxxxxFFFFFFFFFxxxFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFxxx
where x denotes files, and F denotes free space.
Why are there three clumps of files ? Why is is not looking like
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF ???

I'm suprised you have xxxxxxxxxxFFFFFFFFF at all.
Sounds more like a
WWWWWWWWtttttttttttFFFFFFFFFFFFF to me.
LOL
:D

Can't answer the "still fragmented" question, but I'll be monitoring this post for sure.

Is this NTFS? Which defrag utillity are you using?

Because of the way that NTFS works some authorities consider free space consolidation under that file system to be of far less importance than it was under FAT16 or FAT32. Some defrag utilities do offer an alternative method that will consolidate NTFS free space.
