Faster 1.8" hard drives?

#1 Post by aamsel » Tue Nov 09, 2004 1:03 am

1.) When do you think that we will see 1.8" hard drives with faster rotational speeds than 4200rpm? These are the drives found in the X40.

2.) Also, do the 1.8" hard drives have the same 42 pin interface as the 2.5" standard notebook drives?
Thanks,

We're still waiting for higher capacity drives, so I think drives with higher rotational speeds will be a hope for the even more distant future. And, actually, I wouldn't be surprised if we see 2.5" drives in the next generation of the X-Series back again, but this is just a wild guess based on the many user complaints about noise and performance problems with the smaller form factor. Anyway, in my opinion, with S-ATA coming soon, this P-ATA 1.8"-standard is simply a dead end.

Yes, see the papers that I have referenced in an earlier posting:

OK, thanks, I read most of those papers (sorry I didn't use 1.8 as my search criteria).

There is mention in them of "44 pin" connectors.

So, the drive used in the X40 uses a 42 pin?

Thanks!

No, the interface connectors on both the common 2.5" and the SFF8111-1.8"-drives have 44 pins.
