Wireless

#1 Post by Gee » Sun Oct 28, 2007 9:40 am

I just purchased an X61 two days ago. Spent yesterday tweaking Vista to look like XP. First thing I did was turn off UAC (User Access Control)

So far so good.

However, I still have my X40 and when I tested my wireless, Access Connections on the X40 found 12 different access points. My X61 found 4. The notebooks are in the exact same spot.

Am I missing something?

Maybe I should have purchased a model with the external antenna.

That's odd - I encountered just the opposite with my X61 - it picked up more access points than my R40 did and all of them at much higher signal strength (some >25% higher). I have the Intel Wireless N card and the 2x3 ultra connect antenna in my model - which wireless card do you have in your X61? I believe there are three different models you can configure them with...

How many of the access points were accessible in terms of actualy being able to connect to them?

Seeing and access point and having useful connectivity are often far from the same thing?

Cheers,

Bill

I am in a fairly rural area. up until now, the only wireless network to be seen was our own.

this has been with: 600X w/ atheros b/g pcmcia card, X31 w/ built in atheros a/b, dell 700m w/ built-in intel b/g, desktop machine w/ atheros a/b/g and big honking external antenna, X61t w/ built-in a/b/g, and even my nokia n770 which always sees way more networks than any pc does. still, all we ever saw was our own router.

then the girlfriend wanted multitouch and a new X61t arrived... this one has the 2x3 antenna. immediately it found 2 networks from neighbors pretty far down the road, plus 1 more network apparently from some guy's tmobile phone. can't try to connect as they were all secure. not showing more than 1 or 2 bars, not that that's very scientific ha.

I think it's about the antenna, not the config software. but when I have a chance I can try switching between ibm and ms managers on the X61t and see.
go away.
