Ultrabay hard drive

Two part question. Does an Ultrabay hard drive adapter exist for the T4X series?

I have an extra one in the office I am planning to put a virtual machine on and use for testing stuff on. So if I can get a 2.5" second HD installed in it, would this help performance if I put the VHD on a different hard drive from the OS?

Answering the first part...

Yes. What you are looking for is the Ultrabay Slim 2nd hard drive adapter. FRU is 62P4553 (ASM 62P4552, Marketing part number 62P4554; don't know why IBM has three different ways of specifying the same thing

).

edit: Note, this FRU is for parallel ATA (PATA) drives. There's another FRU for serial ATA (SATA) drives: 26R9246 which does not appear to work with T4x systems. Uh... I think that's T40-T42 systems; T43 appears to use SATA drives. (Only have T41s at the moment...)

Actually, the T43 still uses PATA drives (only). It has a SATA to PATA bridge because the motherboard chipset has SATA onboard but the laptop was designed for PATA HDD's.
