Sorry for the book, but had to share! Awesome looking OLDER TP's are still out there...here is my story:
Well I must say I am impressed!! I forgot how FAST (NO JOKE!) these things are…
Friday I called a local USED computer reseller to see if he had any X31’s; he told me to call later, he would check.
I called again Friday, he had not been able to check. “Call tomorrow” was his reply…
Saturday I called, he had one!! I drove there today (long drive!) and I find myself with an X31 in 6 out of 10 shape, some cracks on the LCD bezel (near the hinge) also lots of wear on the exterior with some huge scuffs…Centrino 1.4. When I asked him the price I almost fell on my ars…
I tell him is too high and what I am willing to pay X amount, he looks at me and tells me he will think about it and to call him tomorrow…LOL!
I ask him if he has other X series, he has X2x’s coming out of his years…and then an X30…MINT! I kid you not… 9 out of 10. Keyboard NEW, LCD like NEW, PLASTICS INTACT, some wear on the LCD top cover along the corners…whoever owned this, had it in a bag; a lot…other than that…again MINT!
The X31 had NO media-base; this had everything including the media-base and CDRW/DVD drive. I looked at it and was salivating…power it on…basic XP load, no drivers…but it was beautiful… I asked the price; again I fell on my ARS (about what they are going for on eBay with Buy it Now!!)
His “excuse” for the high price was the condition of the machine…granted…but still high!
Having a new Seagate HD at home as well as memory, and considering I have no use for the burner. DVD is OK, since some apps come in DVD format now; also I burn a lot on DVD…so I need at least a DVD reader. I start “removing” options. I removed the 40GB HD, went with 256MB RAM (IBM) the other 256MB was “SimpleTech” and I could care less for it. I was a little upset that I would have to use a PCMCIA wireless card since I saw NO WiFi logo on the machine; HOWEVER I did notice the “Antenna Ears” on each side of the LCD…maybe it was WiFi upgradeable. He was willing to toss in a Cisco PCMCIA WiFi card with the purchase. Well I continued to “deal”; after three hours of driving him crazy (I think) I got an X30 with no “wireless”, no HD, 256MB ram and a DVD-ROM…for $125 less than he originally asked for…now it was looking better…
I tossed another fifty bucks on the now agreed on price for the X30 if he would sell me the X31…he was about to say “OK” but tossed in a higher number…NO GO for me…
I brought the X30 home and took her apart…and that is when I F’d up…while removing the keyboard, somehow I cracked the palm-rest above the PCMCIA cover…there goes MINT! The system had a “new” motherboard branded by “IBM” as “Usable Used Part” so the machine had been to the doctor at least once…everything was NICE AND CLEAN…PRISTINE ACTUALLY… except for the fact that IBM went on the cheap side and used the OLD CMOS battery, so it will not “attach” to the board since the double sided tape is DOA…Inside I found a Cisco Wireless Card…WIRELESS READY! BONUS…
I tossed in an 80GB, 5400RPM Seagate HD an additional 512MB ram (768 total) and loaded XP as well as other apps and drivers…WOW! I am typing on it now, fast machine even with a PIII 1.2!!!
So now I am the PROUD and HAPPY owner of an X30…
2672-4XU
Battery is GREEN with 71 Cycles, again the owner of this one did not seem to use it much. First use date is almost identical to the three year warranty expiration time on the Lenovo site. So I can assume this is the original battery…
EDIT1: Typo
