Flexview screen-worth how much?

#1 Post by chazz » Mon Oct 29, 2007 4:28 pm

Hi
I have a a good, clean UXGA flexview pulled from a R50P that Iam "thinking about" selling...(I've replaced the orginal UXGA with a QXGA) but now ..I need the $ to buy a new hard drive..
its in good, clean condition..I did a UDPIXEL check and it looked clean only a slight, faint pinch on the right side of the screen (on the corner ) which I've heard this is common with Flexview screens...
Does anybody know about how much its worth...(screen only)
thanks

It took me a long time and many price reductions to sell my 15.0" UXGA panel, also from an R50p. See this thread.

You may just want to keep it, just as a backup.

They dont make flexview screens anymore. And its not like screens get "outdated" like processors or hard drives or memory. That screen is still the best out there (well apart from the flexview QXGA )

IMO, even though notebook hardware is changing very fast, most people's hardware requirements aren't changing much. For most of us, the original Banias Pentium M is still more than adequate. Actually, even a high-end Pentium III is still plenty good.

This UXGA panel that you have would be perfect for upgrading a cheap 15.0" XGA R- or T-series Thinkpad that you might buy someday as a backup machine.

You can save it for a C2D 15" to upgrade a couple of years down the line. The screen wont degrade in the closet

I'm pretty sure you can't just plop a T4x/R5x screen into even a properly sized T6x casing. The cables don't match, so unless you're into much fun with a soldering iron, you're limited to the generation the screen was made for.

T60p FlexView is entirely different from ones used on T4/R5 series, which are, in turn, very different (not by specs though) from original ones used on A3 series.

But pianowizard has a very good point of keeping a screen to upgrade a R or T series machine that comes along the way, with busted LCD or just with a non-FlexView one.

I once found a post on this forum claiming that a few T60p's used the same UXGA Flexview screen as the R50p/T42p. Assuming that post was correct, one should be able to transfer an R50p's UXGA-IPS to a T60p. Of course you can't just use the R50p's UXGA cable and inverter on the T60p, but instead you need to get the cable and inverter designed for the T60p.

Has anyone here on the forums (or somewhere else - other forums or physically seen) opened the LCD Case / Assembly of a T60 ot T61?

Even though the cables are differently shaped / designed (as shown in the Hardware manuals) I am guessing that the LCD "plug" would be the same for most LCDs?

Remember - This industry thrives on modularization and standardization so I wouldnt see LCD manufacturers making LCDs with custom PLUGS - For the LCD Cable & The Inverter Cable that both plug into the LCD.

Can anyone verify? Thoughts?

The T60p had used the Flexviews for T43ps for quite a long time it seems, not just the last batches used the IDtechs from the T43ps either.
I have not disassembled my LCD lid, but as both the BOE-Hydis and IDtech are 30-pin, they have the exact same pinout and are positioned in the same region on both panels. No soldering needed, just gently remove or insert the cable.

Troels - Can you point out and elaborate please? I'd like to see which T60s were these and how they were different / similar to the T43s before them and the T60s after them.

Do respond and shed some more light on that in this thread.

Have to agree with you here (maybe not about the P-III...) The company I work at gives Thinkpads to all its employees. Lots of people here still have T42s and T43s, and they only recently upgraded the people who had a T41 to a T61. Very few complain about slowness with their laptops, and even that is only because of the insanely heavy system image that the company installs on the laptops (Right now with Firefox, Outlook, Skype, MSN and VNC open I have 90 processes running taking almost 900MB of RAM).
