T61 - Can you buy warranty after receiving your laptop?

#1 Post by rxblitzrx » Tue Oct 30, 2007 11:03 am

I got my T61 last week and now I'm wondering if I should have bought the extended warranty. Can I go back and purchase more?

But do you need to extend the warranty while you are still covered by the original policy or will they let you purchase a warranty even after the original one expires?

For example - T43 - warranty expired on 3/2007, can I purchase a warranty on 11/2007 through 11/2008?

Also, will this warranty cover existing condition? For example, if my backlight for the screen or video card is shot on 4/2007, can I buy a warranty in 11/2007 and have Lenovo repair the laptop?

(note - this is a hypothetical situation only)

When I tried to get a warranty extension on a just out of warranty T42, I was told by a Lenovo rep on the phone that I could not purchase it since the warranty lapsed.

Note also the following regarding accident protection coverage.
Lenovo wrote:ThinkPad and Lenovo 3000 Protection accidental damage coverage must be purchased within 30 days of your new ThinkPad or Lenovo 3000 notebook product order, and your service term begins concurrently with the product warranty.

your best bet is to call 866-968-4465 and ask a warranty specialist.

Do any of you guys know if a warranty bought in the US also works in Europe? I'm trying to get a friend to buy me a thinkpad in Chicago, then bring it to Europe (I live in France and Portugal) but i'm wondering if i should buy a 3 year warranty along with the thinkpad...

One can, it's called Post Warranty service and merely depends on the Machine "Model" and "Type". Please follow this thread. In addition IBM will service a machine as long as lenovo lists the warranty upgrade for any Machine Type as an available option to buy on it's webpage.

That's a question of ethics, I leave that to you to decide.

Lenovo provides an International warranty service (IWS) webpage for customers to check the IWS eligibility status of their machine by inputing the 4 digits machine type. One should check the IWS eligibility prior to buying a thinkpad from overseas.

Moreover, currently IWS tool has having a little bit of problem lately, some models are showing up as covered all over the world or vice versa. The tool available to IBM techs is revealing the right results so I suggest on contacting lenovo France to verify the results.

thanks Ryengineer. I just simulated buying a random T61p (6459) and the IWS says its ok in
AUSTRALIA, CANADA, INDONESIA, JAPAN, KOREA, MALAYSIA, NEW ZEALAND, PHILIPPINES, SINGAPORE, TAIWAN, THAILAND, UNITED STATES, VIETNAM

Got any clue how i could buy a warranty available for Europe?

I purchased the above T42 several months before the Lenovo buyout, so I was covered by IBM. See following webpage: ServicePac for post-warranty maintenance agreement

I guess that was why I couldn't get a warranty extension. At the time I called, I did ask if any type of warranty was available - and I was told No. [I am not certain if I called IBM or Lenovo at the time, but I believe I called the right number. At any rate, I should have been transferred to the appropriate department if I did call the wrong one.]

It appears Lenovo is more consumer friendly than IBM in this regard. Still, I would call to be certain that Lenovo doesn't have a similar restriction.

D, I hope the Machine Type for your T42 is listed.

I see, this document is recenly updated, but believe me the above policy has never applied to 2 of my friends who had their warranty (post) renewed lately. If it's a strict requirement then all you would be asked to do is to produce a letter stating the machine is used merely for business purposes.

The T42 in question is a 2378-5UU. The warranty expired months ago. I see the 2378 T42's are listed.

However.....This T42 is for personal use. I bought it myself from Cost Central. The company I work for had nothing to do with it. I doubt if they would even consider writing me such a letter if I asked for it.

Outch guessing from that thread, looks like there's not much hope then... do you know anything about buying the laptop in the US *then* buying a 3 year warranty in France? Would that be possible?

Yes, it is possible if and only if the model is IWS eligible.

Please contact your local business partner or IBM support center in France at 0810-631-020 (24/7) for pricing and other inquiries and policies on warranty upgrade.
