Found my new ThinkPad T40!

#1 Post by lilserenity » Thu May 27, 2004 3:25 pm

...AT LAST you say 8)

Hello,

Found my new workhorse, a brand new, unopened sealed T40 from IBM, 3 years IBM carry-in warranty.

It's a 2373JU5.

- Pentium-M 1.5GHz
- 512MB RAM
- 40GB 5400rpm HD
- ATI Radeon 9000 32MB
- 1400x1050 SXGA Screen
- Ethernet 10/100/1000
- DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
- Usual other gubbins, modem, pc-card, usb 2.0 x2
- New battery
- New AC Adapter

And the price?

$1,549.00 including shipping, no sales tax.

That works out around £850 (UKP) and that in the UK is a superb deal - well worth going for. For the same money bought from the UK ($1549) I would have got a T40, with XGA, 256MB, 30gb disk, P-m 1.3GHz, DVD, 10/100 ethernet.

Drastic difference.

This means my T23 (Mistress) shall be leaving slave (560Z) and subby (560X), a sad moment indeed. Maybe T40 will be Goddess.

Hmmm ;-)

But suffice to say, I'm now open to offers on the T23 - which I will put in the for sale section. But do note, the T23 won't be available till the end of June.

As much as I love my solid state 560X, I don't relish the thought of surviving on it for a month. (Though it's a cool machine)

Yours,
A Very Happy Vicky.

You are right on the count of the T41, it was a toss up on what turned up first, a T40 or a T41. The only difference I am aware of is a 266 Vs. 333MHz bus.

As for the T42, all my research showed that:

a.) I could not get a T42 with min. requirements namely:

- SXGA
- 512MB
- and something else I forget

for the same price as I got this T40 for.

b.) The T40 was more than sufficient.

Sure it was released March 2003, but I'm not bothered about when things were released, or about having the latest model badge on my desk.

If I felt the T42 added something worthwhile *for me* to the T4x series I would have gone for it, however as it stands, it wasn't radical enough to warrant waiting for the T42.

Also I am in the UK, T42s are somewhat hard to find still.

And finally, a brand new T41 in the UK costs £1300+ through the usual retail outlets, as such an £850 T40 is a bagain in UK terms, especially for its specification.

Oh and yes the T42 at the bottom end may only be $500-700 more than this T40 but a.) it's a bottom end T42, I really wanted SXGA and b.) it is another $500-700 which I wanted to spend on something else.

Well I think so anyway.

So I didn't rush into this by any means, as I say this is brand new, and sealed from IBM, not a refurb, or remanufacture, brand new. Hardly an awful price by any stretch of the imagination.

500-600 was alot, I thought there was maybe a 100-150 difference. If it gets the job done, it works
