X60 palmrest heat

All,

Since I've just ordered an X60, I'm wondering how much heat these systems generate, especially the right palmrest. I've searched the forum and come across a couple of other threads, but it seems like opinions vary. (Big surprise.) I'm currently using an X31, which, in my opinion, gets pretty hot on the bottom during normal usage. By this I mean non-processor intensive tasks. It gets quite hot when it's really working.

How warm can I expect the X60 to be by comparison? This isn't a huge issue for me, but given some of the things that people have said about these systems, I can't help but be curious.

I recently bought an X60 1707-dc3 (Lenovo) with 2GHz Core2Duo CPU and 4 GB RAM, and I can fry eggs on my right palmrest, although CPU/GPU are located on the left side under the keyboard. Once in operation for 10 minutes, the BIOS starts the fan, which then never stops during operation. Applications running: Office.... thats it.

I also use a X60s 1703-3QU with 1.6 GHz Centrino Duo CPU and 1 GHz RAM, and I love it: always cool, fan runs slowly from time to time, cool right palmrest. Logo still "IBM thinkpad", although of course made by Lenovo.

Both X machines show warm air rising form the cursor block keys, something to get used to.

I think that quality is going down with Lenovo, they let it go down south. How can an X60 get so hot? What is located down there?

My understanding is that it's the wireless card that heats up the right palmrest. Your description of how hot your machine gets isn't exactly reassuring. Makes my X31 sound like an icebox by comparison. Maybe I should look at canceling the order and getting an X60s/X61s instead?

yup the wireless card is located right under right side of palmrest which is causing warm on that area. IBM knew about that issue, but the only thing they tried to do is to released new palmrest with a little bit diff design than the old one so it's can help about that probelm, beside that notthing we can, but i know on the new X61 (not all but some models) they put small fan right under palmrest now.

Well,

the X60 I have is going into service for the howling fan - I hope that it will be somewhat cooler after service. However, I find the 60s cooler and I am somewhat disappointed by the X60 in this regard.

This is funny because it's not my right palm rest but the left on my system that is heating up, so much that my palm sweats and it really starts to become uncomfortable. Conversely, the right palm rest is fine, with ZERO or very little heat being emitted from there. How can that be so different from everyone else? In other words, the stickers on the left side that say "Penabled WACOM, Intel Centrino Pro, and Windows XP" is the side where all the heat is. Strange and different but true.

Actually I have the X61 not the X60 which might explain why the heat on mine is from the left and not the right.

Yes, it's odd there is such a difference between machines. I've been using my X61 for 2.5 hours or so now browsing the web and neither the left nor the right palm rest are hot - or even what I'd consider warm for that matter.

I use X60 which used to be very uncomfortable. The right palmrest
was about 15 degC hotter than ambient temp.

So, I made some modification to the machine.
