How to oil T30 fan, possible?
How to oil T30 fan, possible?
I have a T30 that has a squeaky fan at POST only. At startup, the fan runs at a very slow speed and goes through its, uh-uh-uh-uh-uh etc. Once I'm signed in, the fan stops and when the fan does come on when needed, at regular speed, no squeak. No noise at all.
I read that the fan can be oiled. I have the P4 1.6Mhz cpu.
Any ideas or suggestions...........
Thanks,
Ron
PS. This happens only the first time in a day, subsequent times are fine at startup.

Whatever you do, do NOT use WD40 to oil a fan. It will dissolve whatever grease is in the bearing(s) of the fan.
Here is a post about oiling fans.

I agree with the article with one exception...
Cleaning with the oil will cause more dust to collect. Granted, this prevents more from getting blown deep into the heatsink, but the heatsink is difficult enough to clean already.
I remove the heatsink and clean any thermal compound with alcohol wipes, and then q-tip, old tooth brush, pipe cleaners, ect with water to clean the rest. Dry with canned air if you dont have an air compressor. DO NOT see how fast you can make the fan spin with air. Gently hold the fan with just enough pressure to prevent it from spinning in the center of the accessible side.
For lube, I combine graphite with Marvel mystery oil. You only need a half a drop for most fans.

Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain.
