Windows update error=lost disk space.
Windows update error=lost disk space.
I was installing serice pack 2 on my t42p last night and started downloading it. I lost connection or something and the download resulted as incomplete and an error.
So Im going to install via cds ordered through microsoft, but now im out about 5-600mb. Where can I find this partially downloaded update file(s) and can i just delete it? The reason I say this is because I lost all this disk space right after this update download.

I tried that and only freed about 30 megs. Actually i have about 1 gig used up since the time i started downloading till the time it stopped. I also tried to download a couple times, so i dont know if that factors in to the used up disk space.

I'm throwing this in for the benefit of all who wonder where all their disk space is being used.
Put this into your software toolbox.
This program creates a boxed map of the HDD. The bigger the box, the bigger the file...
Saved me a few times...

Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain.
Thanks an interesting program, but I have a feeling its a bunch of smaller files taking up space.
When doing disk clean up there is an option to remove back up(system restore) files, up until the most recent restore point.
Should I do that?

Give CCleaner a chance.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>
..... directory tree, possibly in one of the "hidden" folders (so make sure you have "display hidden" selected for folder options). Anyway, that's always a good place to have a hunt around for culprits if you are chasing disk space which has mysteriously disappeared!
The filenames may well he incomprehensible, so I suggest working of file date stamps, and when you find the culprit files, rename them first (adding an X at the end of the name will do) and see if anything dire happens. If not, go ahead and delete them.
Cheers,
Bill B.
wow this cleaner sure did a good job, freed up about 2 gigs of hard disk space.
Now my question is.. is is safe for this cleaner software to tamper with the registry files?

the only problem i've ever had with ccleaner was under vista ultimate x64. it said that registry entries for the synaptics touchpoint control were incorrect so i let it "repair" them. this messed up the ultranav drivers, requiring me to reinstall the driver. not a big deal -- just a minor annoyance. i've since learned to repair everything except anything having to do with the syncontrol.
i've used ccleaner for a few years and it is has proven to be very reliable for deleting extra files. if you use ccleaner for registry cleaning/repair, however, just be careful with what you let it "fix". backing up the registry is always a good idea.
