ThinkPad R61i or R61 fan noise

#1 Post by BobSmith103 » Wed Nov 07, 2007 2:01 pm

Was just wondering if anyone had either of these laptops what the fan noise levels were.

Do either of the processors (R61i has 5250/R61 has 7100) run cooler than the other?

I'm unfortunately very sensitive to fans going on and off constantly, less sensitive to the fan running for a while to cool the proc then going off for a while. I had to return a Toshiba A200 due to the fan constantly turning on and off with no way to control it whatsoever. I understand that the R series seems to be reviewed as cool and quiet but was wondering what anyone's real-world experience was with the fans. Is there any direct fan control on either of these? Thanks very much.

I don't own either of the TPs you mention, but have seen and played with loads of R-Series. IMHO don't worry, they are both quiet.
The 5250 will produce less heat.
At the end of the day; the fan will run at some point if the cpu has to work hard, the answer lies in what are the applications you will be running.

Thanks for the info Andy, really appreciate it. You were saying that the 5250 would produce less heat. That makes sense to me too but I have also heard that the 7100 would produce less heat and that this person wanted to "stay away" from 1.5Ghz processors (the 5250) but didn't explain why. Do either of those statments make sense? I would be using the 5250 with XP Pro.

Have a look at the Intel website, my feelings tell me that the specs of the T5250 say it should be cooler.
However, they will both be very cool if you only write letters in word and surf the internet, give them a big database to work and the story will be different.
