T61P Atheros mini-PCI express card - BIOS Compatability ?

#1 Post by phil san » Thu Nov 08, 2007 10:07 pm

Looking to substitute a "Gigabyte " Atheros based adapter ABGN on a T61P with a DLINK 655 router running Vista 32 Bit, where I have now the Intel Wireless 4965AGN.

I read, that certain Lenovo Thinkpads have a BIOS lock so as "NOT" to be able to utilize another card.

Unfortunately, can not find any more information.

Anyone? :?:

The gigabyte atheros will prevent your T61p from booting due to failed BIOS check. You can only use Lenovo parts.

Your question was a bit confusing. A router cannot substitute a wifi card. The dlink certainly doesn't run vista ...

Sorry for confusion. I got a free DLINK 655 which is Vista supported.

Wanted to use the n setting but need an compatable express.

Heard Lenovo T's didnot support but possibly the T61 did.

Unless your Intel Wireless 4965AGN was specifically stated as "N disabled" (as some are) you should already have good 802.11n support in your T61!

Did you try ordering the Thinkpad A/G/N mini-pci card?

I have the Intel ABGN card but as "I" understand, it will not support N unless you have a 5ghz router of which only Linksys, Airport 1 and Buffalo are available and very high priced. In order for the intel 4965 to actually connect at 300mbps speeds you will need a 5ghz router. The 5 ghz range will use the 40mhz which achieves the 300mbps.

Since Dlink 655 has the Atheros AR5008E-3NX chipset a matching card i.e http://www.oxfordtec.com/us/shopping_cart.php should achieve the results. Have it in a Dell but try to put it into the T61p and the 1820 post error.

So I wait till better N routers come out i.e dlink 855 which will be compatable with Intel abgn and spen $ or try to overcome the Bios lock.

Iv'e searched and found several mods to eliminate the post error but seem to stop at the introduction of the T60.

Just interested if there was a way.
