T61p - asking to settle final doubts re. overheating

#1 Post by kfa » Fri Nov 09, 2007 6:05 am

Hi @,

First of all a friendly hello as I'm new to this forum.

I hope to be able to get my dream machine some time soon, as change is overdue (s. signature) and the T61p tops the list.

After reading several forum threads here and from other sources, there remains a shred of doubt related to possible overheating. I am a heavy user of OpenGL (Second Life), and sessions can last 10-12 hours at times. It seems to be working for some users, others are reporting problems with shutdowns due to overheating, and some say it worked after having their machine sent in for repairs. I hope I didn't overlook anything, but I didn't get the impression that there's a final conclusion on this issue.

What say the experts, or is there another die-hard SL'er with this machine who could report first-hand experience? Does it have an impact on heat production if I order the 2.4GHz CPU instead of 2.0, a 7200rpm HD instead of 5400, or other upgrades? Anybody got experience with other brands (e.g. Clevo)?

Thanks for any pointers!
Currently: Dell Inspiron 7500 - they still had quality at that time! + several desktops thrown together from scraps.

The only thing I can address in your post in that if you choose the 2.2 or 2.0 over the 2.4, you can save on lots of heat production. The hard drive will not make a significant difference. I hope you find someone who uses SL as well to share their experience. I have played 3d games for hours on my 2.2 ghz T61P without a problem.
