T40 new system board?

#1 Post by Kurtismonger2 » Sun Nov 11, 2007 7:52 am

A few weeks ago I posted about a broken DC jack that I had soldered and got working for a while. I've since replaced the DC jack with a brand new one, but the laptop remains completely dead. No lights whatsoever when plugged in. I'm guessing my solder job fried something. I'm wondering if replacing the system board is my best option or if there is a smaller subsystem worth trying to replace first.

If you broke something soldering the jack and then replaced it, and it gets no lights, there is something bad on the MB. Without seeing the board, I can only guess. You might have dropped some solder onto the board and gotten a short. Without knowing the type of fix you were attempting, that seems most likely. If that happened, it could be a blown fuse, if you are lucky, but most people or repair shops don't fix such things. One thing I find confusing is the fact that it worked a while after your soldering. That doesn't sound like a short, unless some part of your repair physically broke and dropped onto the board. Are you sure the jack you bought was good? The way I test jacks is I clamp them into something that will hold them steady, without shorting anything, and put 4 small wires into the plug. Then I plug is an A/C adapter (trying not to short anything out) and test the voltages with a meter.
