#1 Post by Entropy1024 » Sun Nov 11, 2007 9:28 am

Is it possible to make the DVD drive in a T60 Region Free? If so how?

Many thanks for any help

it is possible, of course..

One way, if you have, Hitachi/LG DVD-RW such as GSA-4083N, you can download RPC-1 (region free) firmware from here:

http://tdb.rpc1.org/

However, if you have Panasonic/Matshita such as UJ-842 drive or any other drive, your best bet would be to use software-based solution, such as AnyDVD:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html

Good luck!

You got Anydvd to work with UJ-842 without reducing user region change count? Even Anydvd webpage says those M a t s u s h i t a drives are problematic.

Well now you have got me wondering. I just loaded the software and the disk played where as before I got a pop up saying 'This will change your region, proceed?'.
I am not sure if it did swap the region on the drive and just did not show me the popup.
How can I check?

AnyDVD doesn't change your region, dont' worry. It basically creates a "region-free" software layer and that' why you don't get a popup. So hardware-wise, things should remain identical.

To check the region of your DVD drive open Device Manager >> DVD-ROM drive properties and click "Region"

On the side note, I've been using AnyDVD with Matshita drives in the past and never had a problem.
