getting my modem to work

I have an mod. 600 thinkpad, it has XP pro loaded. Trying to get Outlook Espress to connect....There is no audible sound, it almost instantly gives:
dialing...
dialing...
dialing...
unable to establish a connection

I tried all the obvious stuff like checking to turn on the modem sound, and other various things....but not sure where to start.

This is my first try at getting this machine on line. Could I be missing some drivers or what ?

First, check devide manager to see if the modem is even installed properly (no exclamation marks or red x). If it is, then do a search here...common problem with the 600series modem. There is a patch to fix it. I believe it was a thread on here just a few days ago.
