t42 frequency scaling problem

#1 Post by frgtn » Sun Nov 11, 2007 6:45 pm

I've just bought a used t42 2373-Y8N and i have frequency scaling problems.

Cpu in my laptop was changed from 1.5ghz pentium-m 715 to 1.8ghz model (750). According to my bios the cpu is still running at 1.5ghz, so i suspect the new chip requires 400mhz memory and mine runs at 333mhz ddr (the memory was replaced as well). I've updated the bios and it's still the same. But that's not my main problem

While in bios the cpu runs at 1.5ghz which would be just fine, but after i boot some OS it thottles down to 600mhz and doesn't want to go any higher even under heavy load. I've played both with bios and windows xp power management settings but it didn't help. I've also tried a tool called SpeedSwitchXP to manage frequencies manually but it detected maximum cpu frequency at 600mhz refused to monitor the frequency in real time.

So now i'm stuck with my laptop running at 600mhz. I know i could contact the seller and ask him to replace the cpu and ram with the original ones, but that's a last resort option. Is there any other way to make the cpu work at 1.5ghz frequency during normal operation?

You got the wrong cpu.

T40-T42 only use the 7x5 series.
7x0 series are 533 fsb. Meaning 14x multiplier, iirc. Meaning even if you manage to get beyond 600mhz (there's a way to do that [1]), you'll only get to 1.4ghz.

Then again, somebody on this forum was able to mod 533 into a T42, but he never said what he did exactly, and it's probably a difficult and soldery sort of mod anyways.

[1] It was with one of these programs: NHC, RMClock, CrystalCPUID.

Thanks for the insight, it was very helpful.

I doubt software or moddign is a good long term solution so i've decided to replace my chip with a 7x5 one.

maybe that somebody found the mod CPU got the whole laptop burnt, and don't even able to get online to post a little thread here

Hehe good point Gunston :)

Anyways, I've contacted the seller and got the chip replaced with a 725 1.6ghz model. Now it works like a charm. Thanks for the help.
