Most of the cold starts of my T42 are OK. But, I occasionally get the following Windows message: "Windows cannot find 'c:\IBMTOOLS\eGagtherer\launcheg.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly ..."
The actual location of the file is
"C:\program files\IBMTOOLS\eGatherer\".
I have searched the registry for the faulty file name string but can't get any hits.
So, is this a serious issue, or can I ignore it? If the problem should be corrected, what is the best way to repair the problem?
Thanks

I don't know what it is but possibly some IBM software whose installation was interrupted, or some online registration program which reminds you of your obligation at the startup. So it's nothing serious. You can live without any IBM software.
To get rid of it:
Start => Run => msconfig => Startup tab, then uncheck the relevant box => Restart
I think it shouldn't bother you anymore.
You can also delete the entire folder and download CCleaner to clean the registry.

Here is where a registry cleaner program can come in handy. I searched my registry and saw where Software Installer apparently uses egatherer. I do not have System Update installed, but there is a good chance the SU uses it. Rescue and Recovery would be another possible culprit.
Since you have a copy of egatherer on your system, why don't you create the directory C:\IBMTOOLS\eGatherer\ if it doesn't exist, and copy the files from C:\program files\IBMTOOLS\eGatherer\ into it?
I wonder why you have the directory IBMTOOLS as a subdirectory of program files? AFAIK, normally IBMTOOLS is in the root directory. Maybe you should move the entire directory to your root directory.
