The only aircraft I've personally seen up close that's in the size category is a Lockheed C-5A Galaxy. Looking up the stats on both planes is interesting:

Code: Select all

                   C5 A380 747-400ER
        Length 247 239.5 232 Feet
      Wingspan 223 262 195.5 Feet
        Height 65 79 63.5 Feet
 Crusing speed 0.69 0.85 0.85 Mach
Max t/o weight 840000 1235000 910000 lbs
Range Unlimited 8200 7670 Nautical mi
edit: Added 747-400ER specs

You were expecting something like a B-52? What's very interesting to watch is a U-2 (ER-2) taking off or landing with its bicycle gear. Saw that a couple of times at Ames Research Center.

Yep, saw the A380 on test flight in Frankfurt a while ago.
actually not much bigger than the 747, because of the 80x80m airplane airport box.

But Airbus today announced that they started on the A380-900 model, which would be 80m long. At least the looks would be much better than the current WhaleBus.

Is this what you are referring to?

It is true that the A380 is not the most esthetic aircraft ever made.(My opinion)

The fuselage length double-deck does give it a balloon-like profile.

That being said, the sheer size is impressive.

What really struck me was the eerie quietness of the engines on this ship...almost an electric sound.

It was this feature(along with the bulk of the airframe) that most of the spectators around me, all of whom were airport employees, commented on.

It's big... for a passenger plane

This landed in Edmonton about a week ago...

One wheel is about the size of a person... and this thing has about 30 of them.
