How to make IE7 run faster?

#1 Post by ulrich.von.lich » Mon Nov 12, 2007 6:34 pm

I find IE7 runs MUCH faster on a T60p than on a T43. (IE7 takes more time to load photos and other stuff on the T43)

Why? Thanks to its Duo Core processor? Is it normal the processor would make such a big difference?

Specifications:
T43 PM2.0Ghz/1.5GB/7K100 PATA/Intel 2200BG/Vista
T60p CoreDuo2.16Ghz/2.0GB/7K100 SATA/Intel 3915ABG/XP

Maybe thanks to its SATA drive? Does the Intel 3915 perform better? Or I didn't tweak it correctly in Vista?

Any clue would be appreciated!

You'll find that Firefox runs even faster than IE (although it's startup time is a little longer).
And Opera beats FF again...

Graphics cards are usually some improvement factor, as is the speed of the hard disk (for the temporary cache).
The processor has next to no influence at all.
A PC with a 486 processor runs just as fast.

Yes Firefox always runs faster than IE. But if I compare IE on the T60p with Firefox on the T43, the former is still much better in terms of speed.

Why would graphics cards improve surfing speed? I've never considered it important. Indeed, the T60p has a 256MB FireGL card while the T43 only has a 64MB X300.

They both have a 100GB 7200rpm hard drive but the one on the T60p is SATA.

Thanks for sharing your opinions

I find IE7 plenty fast on my T41 (which has very vanilla, run-of-the-mill graphics). Check to make sure your cache is small (20Mb will do) and try emptying it to see if that speeds it up. Excessive cache can drag down the whole machine let alone IE.

Both your graphics cards are fine and won't show much difference in displaying pictures (time-wise).
Older TPs with only 8 or 16MB graphics memory, or PCs with integrated graphics, will display images somewhat slower.
The hard diskspeed comes mostly into play when you go back to the previous page(s). They are displayed from your HD-cache, and the faster the HD, the faster the display.

You could check what IE add-ons that is installed on the T43 and compare with the T60. Maybe try to disable some and see if that help. I noticed that the client security solution install a add-on in IE7 that made IE much slower on my computer. Disabled the add-on and everything is fine again. I guess the add-on is for password manager that i don't use anyway.
I also seen that some antivirus software have some proxy functions to scan all internet traffic that could slow down the speed as well. Download managers that could install a add-on in IE.

Is the internet connection slower on the T43 in general or just IE7? If it's slower in general using any program like downloading using a ftp client i guess the problem isn't IE7. By the way i use a T43 with IE7 with no such problems.

My T23 is very slow with displaying graphics on web pages, but I attribute this mainly to buggy drivers. The pages don't take longer to load, it's just that the machine takes a little bit to show some of the images, which makes browsing "jerky".

I had the same problem but not quite as bad. Try Opera.

Thanks guys for the posts.

I don't have my T43 with me right now but I just found out the performance of IE7 was slowed down on my T60p after a couple of days of use. I disabled some add-ons and now it's back to normal.

Actually I saw a lot of add-ons there, most of which I don't seem to remember installing. I was not allowed to remove them for some reason but it's ok I guess, as long as I can disable them.

T23 has a 16MB graphic card right? I run Windows XP via Virtual PC 2007 and the emulated PC has only 8MB VRAM if I remeber right. And I find the performance of IE very acceptable. So it might be caused by the CPU?

Thanks, jdhurst and wiz, for good suggestions. Trying them for a while. :)
