Need recommendation for wifi card for 560x and Win98

#1 Post by mirau560x » Mon Nov 12, 2007 6:53 pm

Hello....I have a 560x running Win98 (not 98SE) and now that I have wireless broadband I'd like to get an adapter to connect to the internet. I'm hoping that someone else has had success doing this and has a recommendation for a wifi card.

Slight preference for high-power PCMCIA card, so that I don't use up my only USB port, but it doesn't matter that much.

I think I have a copy of Win98SE that I can upgrade to if necessary. According to the boxes at the store, many wifi cards need Win98SE (not Win98).

I could also upgrade to XP (I have 96 MB of RAM so I think it would work).

I appreciate any recommendations or suggestions! I'm fond of my old 560x and would like to be able to take it on trips and work in the backyard.

I have two 560X machines each with 64 MB. One runs XP Home and the other XP Pro. They take an age to boot and they are very slow to open up and close down applications, but once they get going they are both happy surfing the internet using PCMCIA cards.

Solving other problem first...

I picked up a cheap card (a Dynex DX-WGNBC) to experiment with. The driver loaded, the 560x recognizes it, and the link light flashes and acts like it's connecting with my wireless DSL.

However....before I started looking into wireless cards, I was having trouble with IE and Firefox failing to open web pages and with installing the most recent versions of both (page faults). I'll have to resolve this problem next, but after I do I'll let y'all know what the resolution was.
