R51e: 256MB + 1GB = 896MB?

I have a R51e that came with 256MB RAM. The maximum RAM is 2GB, so I upgraded with 1GB of PC2-4200 RAM. However, in the BIOS and in Windows, only 896MB are shown. I saw that 128MB is used for video memory and 1GB - 128 MB = 896MB. But what happened to the orginal 256MB of RAM? Has any one else had this problem?

I swapped the memory for a different brand with the exact same specs. All the memory now shows up.
