T23 Wifi Install [PICS]

#1 Post by Pro547 » Tue Nov 13, 2007 3:36 am

Here are some pics of my wifi install.

I ordered a antenna called
One WiFi mini PCI Card Antenna 802.11B/G Wireless U.FL
from
linknergy

A little long for where I wanted to put it. In the last picture I cut the antenna to fit it better next to the batter. There is only one antenna in this unit. I am not satisfied at all by the reception I get so I know that I will be installing a second one soon. Full gallery here http://www.twistedsevens.com/gallery/v/ ... s/t23wifi/

You say you cut the antenna? If by that you mean you trimmed off the end of the small printed circuit board which contained the thin copper traces, then you have de-tuned the antenna for the frequency used by the 802.11b/g wireless card. That may be the real reason why your reception is not as good as you may have expected. Granted, mounting any antenna in the base will not be as good as putting them up in a properly designed lid which has cutouts in the metal, but altering the length of the antenna is NOT what you want to do.

If I had my way I would have done it properly. I wanted something to get my setup working quickly and it worked. Might not be the best way but it works for what I need. I could be that I am also going through a pretty thick concert wall. I need to do some more testing and get a second antenna in there. If I do this again I will get one with a shorter cable and cut the length of the cable to the exact size.

I wanted to get the ones for the display but couldn't find anything that was cheap enough for that. And plus I didn't want to cut my metal display case. But if someone has a nice way to do it I might have to give it a shot.

If you haven't seen this post already:

there may be some information in there that would be useful for you. I don't believe that I tested that particular antenna design but I will put it on my list for a second round in case I get some time to re-visit that experiment.
