Question about thinkpads with IPS screens?

#1 Post by SaberX » Tue Nov 13, 2007 2:06 pm

Just wondering what would be the cheapest thinkpad that has....
-IPS screen ,UXGA or SVGA+
- cpu power in P4-m OR P-m

I know some A30's have the IPS but still P-III's.
Would the A31P or some R50's be the cheaper systems with IPS?

I have a nice X30 but while waiting for it to in the mail,i was thinking i bought it to fast.I like to have something with a bit more cpu power.
I may look at trading the loaded X30 i have for something else.

I would look at a T4Xp system that has Flexview. A R5Xp might be a little cheaper, but I think it is worth it to get a T4x because of the size factor. My T41 does not have IPS, but I still like the LCD panel in it. It gets nice a bright and has a good viewing angle.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Recently, I've picked up the following (shipped prices, all complete units in very good+ condition);

A31 (non-P) with 1.8GHz Pentium 4 mobile CPU & 15" SXGA+ IPS for $215 (update, damaged in shipping, refund pending...)

R50 with 1.6GHz Pentium M CPU & 15" SXGA+ IPS for $275

T42 with 1.7GHz Pentium M CPU & 15" SXGA+ IPS for under $400 (with warranty!)

If you're a little patient, you can get one for a good price.

One tip to grabbing a T42 with IPS is to carefully read the spec's and look at the pictures of eBay ads. Many sellers do not know what they have but may tip you off by stating ATI 9600 GPU or by listing 14.1" LCD when it's obvious in the picture it's 15" SXGA+. T42's ranged quite a bit in spec's, from basic models that were beneath some T40's to super machines, with 9600 video, IPS, Bluetooth and 7200RPM drives. Attention to detail is required with these purchases.

For low price, my recommendation is to go for an R50 or R51 - they are sturdy and modern (USB 2.0, long battery life, Pentium M's), some are still under warranty. Very tough to beat if picked up for under $300.

I totally agree on the R5xs being good deals. I recently picked up a low-spec'd R50 locally for $200. I did a quick upgrade on it (faster P-M CPU, RAM to 512Mb, HDD to 60Gb/5400rpm, installed a WiFi card) and it ended up being a speedy close-to-current machine for a total outlay of less then $300.
