Op. Wanted: R31 or 570E fixer uppers worth buying?

#1 Post by emoticonartist » Tue Nov 13, 2007 4:01 pm

I see the following laptops up for auction pretty cheap these days but they are fixer uppers! What do you think, should I go for it as projects?

(Wanted to have a spare to run some Linux on as I really want to get into that OS - and my X30 is my main bundle o'joy!)

R31: no AC, no CD-Rom, no HD, no Wifi card (but antennas are there), no mem sticks (but I have plenty lying around), and the lappy's in good condition (good LCD and all covers incl.) ~$99.00

or

570E: no AC, no ultrabase, no HD, no mem sticks, but in good condition (good LCD and all cover incl.) ~$39.00

Or (last resort) just buy a full complete working X2 series somewhere?

r31 may be an ok fixer upper, but you can probably get a working system with all the components in it for under 175, in working with all parts in it for 149, so if you look it is certainly

With linux, just need to have over 512, and it should work fairly quick even with the celeron processor, but if you want to upgrade, you can easily get a 1.2 PIII or 1.13 PIII on it and it works fine. (I run XP and win2000 on a virtualbox and it runs decent enough for internet and my school stuff).

its a nice cheap alternative to the t23 for less. :P

By the time you're done completing any of these, you'll spend a sum that could've bought you a working machine in the first place...

If you want to run Linux, R31 will probably do OK, while 570E won't.

You can get a working T23 for $200 these days...and a bunch of fine other older, not-so-popular machines for FAR less...

My $0.02 only. You do your math.

awong:

Yeah, it's the "upgrading" that's addictive to me too!
I bought my X30 for 200 clams, but upgraded to a new wireless, new pc133's (to 1GB), a new HD, and a an X3 ultrabase.

You're right though, I'm just always trying to find a "deal" somewhere but it's probably best to wait it out. I'm really just trying to find a good portable to run linux on - I guess another X30 wouldn't be a bad idea no?
