Does anyone have a recommendation for a USB optical drive? I've been looking around for a slim, portable, USB or firewire drive and haven't been able to find too much that doesn't require separate AC power. All I've found so far is:
Targus PADVD010U USB 2.0 DVD/CD-ROM Slim External Drive

I purchased this one. I am really pleased with it. I am able to burn CD's and DVD's with it using *only* a single USB port on my Thinkpad X61 to power the drive (contrary to the review on www.bestbuy.com - they don't mention their laptop manufacturer). It's pretty quiet as burners go and it's quite light (12.8 ounces). Comes with Nero software which is good enough. No carrying case, but I'll find something eventually.
I've had it for a few weeks now and am really pleased.

It was detected just fine as a boot device and I was able to install Linux, etc from it with no problems. Good luck...

It is also quite easy to build your own as I did. That way I selected my own high performance drive (I have a small front loader) and you use a enclosure. External USB DVD/CDROM drives have been discussed a couple of times in the forum and you should be able to find one.

I second that, it just costed me $25 to build one on my own.dfumento wrote:It is also quite easy to build your own as I did.....snip
