Supremely Frustrated with Tablet Mode

#1 Post by spasell » Tue Nov 13, 2007 8:21 pm

I have a X61T with Windows XP. I configured my tablet to auto adjust the screen based on how I rotate the tablet once I have it in tablet mode.

1st, it takes about 2 minutes for it to convert over to the tablet mode.

2nd, once it is there, when I rotate the screen to get out of tablet mode, it just does not do it. I have to actually push the rotate screen button to make it return, but that really does not propel it out of tablet mode.

I cannot understand how this happens. Among all the issues with really slow boot times (yes, I have removed all the ridiculous start up programs and the CSS), and now this, it makes me wish I had that extremely large and heavy R series Thinkpad back in my possession. I am very frustrated.

I was presenting to a customer today on a sales call, and when I went to rotate to tablet mode and use the Microsoft Journal notes, as well as prepare to take notes, it just froze up on me. I had to reboot the whole thing, which took about 5-7 minutes, and had to make small talk and try to remember everything I wanted to go over.

I learned a lesson about having a paper back up, but you would think that with this machine, the cost, and the functionality, I would never have to do this.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this?

I guess these tablet dealies will never work.

how many GIGs of RAM do you have? If it's only one (1GB), that is most likely the fastest (and cheapest solution). My Autorotate used to take longer than coming out of hibernation with only 1 GD.

Mine (X61 tablet, Windows XP) changes orientation pretty much instantly.

Have you checked the system event viewer? You might have a RAM or HD problem, errors would show in the log.

My x61t also rotates flawlessly within ~1 sec.

But I recommend not using the "active rotate" auto-rotate driven by the accelerator (does not really work and sometime erratically changes screen orientation if you move the device).

Use the auto-rotate based on screen mode, that one is good enough and exactly what one needs.

And just a hint: with CTRL+ALT+Cursor you can directly switch to a specific orientation.

2 questions:

I must have it set to auto rotate, so I would I check that and change it?

2nd, you say CTRL+ALT+ cursor...what do you mean "cursor"?

If you go to the Thinkvantage tablet menue (invoke it with the button) there you'll find rotate options.

Cursor = left, right,...

Unfortunately, that option does not exsist for me in the Thinkvantage options.

There's a dedicated button on the bezel...

I don't know how often I read these kinds of posts where the user removes all that "Lenovo crapware" then wonders why there system doesnt work right.

Use Hibernate and/or Standby to shorten your boot times.

1. I did not need all the security features that CSS has.
2. Removing CSS did not add or decrease times, they stayed the same.
3. Hibernating or always placing computer in stand by just puts a bandaid on an open wound.

Also, I understand that there is a button on the bezel to rotate the screen, but THAT is NOT what I am talking about. I want to be able to go to the option where I can simply remove the ability for the screen to auto rotate. I remember having to go there to calibrate the machine to do this, but now, I do NOT want this option. ANYONE?

spasell, there is the Button for the Tablet Menue, right beneath the one for the rotation. There you have all the configuration options...

not on mine there isn't. I know about the tablet menu, but in that menu, there is nothing about getting me out of auto rotate. There is a pen, screen settings, but that is to calibrate, change the view, etc. I am in auto rotate right now. There is no button on my system that takes me out of auto rotate or allows me to do so. I have accessed all help menus and of course it's not listed anywhere in there either.

Just expect that I am telling you correct things. Then you would find it. It is there!

It is greyed out in the downmost left, so a bit difficult to find, something like "settings". Then you get another screen where you have auto-rotation and acceleration sensor settings. I know it is a bit counter intuitive. You're not the first asking...

Can't tell you the exact terms though since I am running my tablet currently under Ubuntu.

Good luck,

Peter

Peter, thank you for hammering on me. I did actually find it after realizing I thought you were talking about Thinkvantage button options rather than the Tablet button. Sorry about that and thank you for your help.
