A21p stopped booting...sort of...

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Wed Nov 14, 2007 10:47 pm

My trusty old A21p (2629-H2U) started acting up yesterday. When I press the power button, the single power light comes on with a very slight "click", some type of a very vague shadow flashes over the LCD for a nanosecond and the machine is completely dead after that.

Trying to power on using AC adapter will dim the power/battery light while the power button is pressed. If I do it with battery only, the battery light will disappear and won't come on after the button has been pressed.

This happens 19 times out of 20. That one "other" time the machine will boot into the Linux installed on HDD with perfect LCD and at normal speed and will function like nothing ever happened.

I've tried removing every component imaginable and rebooting without it, but to no avail.

Ideas, anyone? Highly appreciated, since I'm very fond of this machine-it has been with me for a VERY long time by my standards, used as a Linux testbed, and is still in very good shape for a ThinkPad of its age...

Have you gotten any further on this, George? I'd be particularly interested, since I just bought a cheap A21p (2629-ABG) that I'm told has roughly the same symptoms. Haven't got it yet, but expect it in later this week and anything you might be able to contribute would be of interest.

Incidently, I just don't seem to be able to resist these A2xp machines, even if I haven't done much with them up to now... guess it's an addiction
