WTB: Thinking about a Thinkpad X31, X41, X60, or X61
I am wondering what the going price is for an X60/X61 (not a tablet)? I recently bought a T42, but it's slightly less portable than what I wanted. This is mainly a feeler post to figure out if switching is even feasible. But if you've got a good deal for me, send a PM. Thanks.
EDIT: I added some other potential Thinkpads I'm interested in.

Outlet
Keep in mind the outlet list is not often updated. I just called and was told there are no remaining laptops from the list. I didn't realize the prices of X60s fell that low. I think I may need to adjust the price of the one I have for sale, or just keep it.

I'd recommend an X31 over an X41 because the hard drives for the X41 are 1.8" drives which are expensive and have limited capacity (60GB).

Have you considered the HP nc2400? IMO, it's better than any of the X series Thinkpads. See my review of the nc2400.

I think it's completely feasible to get a X60/61 for under $700, just need to find a desperate enough seller. I believe someone on the forum recently sold a X61s for under $700 recently. I personally like the X40 series, although the 1.8" hard drive really is a negative, but I just use it for word processing and light internet surfing. It really depends on what you are going to use it for.

The X31 sounds nice. I am worried about the speed seeming slow. Can anyone comment on this? I'm looking to install Xubuntu to give you an idea of my system demands. Would it be a better idea just to fork out the extra money for the X60? Would it be better to try and find an X32? Is 350 reasonable to expect to pay for an X31/X32?

If an X60s can be had for $600, then it's possible to find an X61s for $700.Diehard wrote:But it was X60s

If all you want to do is run is Xubuntu, then even an X31 is overkill. Xubuntu would fly on an 1.6GHz or 1.7GHz X31 with 1 GB of RAM. I wouldn't pay over $400 for the basic machine including an X3 media slice. There are several on EBay for just that price. PM me if you want a recommended seller. Oh, and if you get that machine, I can recommend a seller for an internal Atheros mPCI wifi card for it as well (much better for Linux over the standard Intel card).camdecoster wrote:The X31 sounds nice. My mistake, it was an X60s not X61s. Although there really isn't much difference there.
Another factor in purchasing an X60/X61 would be the price of memory. X31 or X40 uses older more expensive memory. If you factor in everything, an X60 with warranty that is well equipped may be more expensive, but serve you longer than a used X31 or X40 without warranty.

What does Bleh! mean on your planet?syedj wrote: Bleh! 1.6Ghz or 1.7GHz X31?![]()
Sorry Harry, I didn't mean to make fun of anyone. I was just making a point that even 1.3GHz is more than plenty to run Linux. If I offended you or anyone else I apologize.Harryc wrote:What does Bleh! mean on your planet? If someone is interested in a particular model I always recommend toward the top end to allow for growth. Let's assume that the OP isn't going to run Xubuntu or Ubuntu forever shall we? Hell, you could easily run Vista basic on one.syedj wrote: Bleh! 1.6Ghz or 1.7GHz X31?![]()

I'll put in another good word for an X31. With a 5400 or 7200 rpm HD, you'll find it very zippy, whether you're using Linux or XP. I can't say enough good things about these machines. I've had an X30 and two X31s now, and they've all been very durable and very reliable. And the size can't be beat. I suppose that there's something to be gained by getting an X40/41 or X60s/61s, but, really . . . it's merely half a pound. The X31 is already light enough as it is, IMHO.

camdecoster,
I'm running Gutsy 7.10 on both my x31 and x60s, and they're both fine. Everything ran out of the box, with exception of the Middle Mouse Button, and Thinkpad specific navigation keys (browser back/forward, and the AccessIBM/Thinkvantage key).
On a side note, I was actually planning on selling my seldom used x60s, but that was until someone posted their rig for $600. Boy, talk about lost opportunity, or being on the wrong end of a blowout. I guess I'll just hang onto it at this rate.

Guys
Just keep in mind that there is a price difference between new and used. The instant the seal on the box is broken the unit is used.
I have been happily selling X60's with UltraBase brand new for $1150 or so. There is plenty of market out there.
Used is always another story. You have to check the remaining warranty, which can be short or nothing as some machines are now 1 year from the factory. You also have to look at specs. Just saying "I can find an X60 for $600" does not mean anything. And the one that was offered here at that price was never sold, so one can not assume that the market is now made because of that one unit.
