Apparently something has gone wrong when trying to install PCLOS.
I can no longer boot from XP Pro.
I come to the XP splash screen and after a while a blue screen, which doesn't stay long and the PC reboots.
The code seems to indicate some possible virus on the boot part.
I have a feeling something was damaged on the mbr and/o the boot sector and I was thinking of executing fixmbr and or fixboot. But as there is no install CD with the PC I don't see how to do this.
With PuppyLinux I was able to see the files on the ntfs partition.
Also I did copy the c: partition (hda1) to an ntfs partition on an ntfs partition external HDD with the dd command.
I did put this this HDD in my desktop and ran a chdsk on that partition. Having errors I ran with the /F parameter.
After that I changed boot.ini to be able to boot from that partition.
That worked to my surprise and I came to the login screen. I gave the password and then got the message to contact Microsoft to obtain an new key for this PC. As this wasn't the aim I didn't do it, but I was happy that aparently boot did work.
Once the external HDD back on the R40 with the dd command in PuppyLinux I restored from the external HDD to the c: (hda1) partition and hoped the boot problem was gone.
Well it wasn't and I still had that blue screen.
How can I go from here to have XP Pro boot again?
R40 no longer boots after attempt to install PCLinuxOS. [OK]

Thank you for the link.ryengineer wrote:Rescue and Recovery - Recovery repair diskette.
But ironically a diskette will be created and the R40 doesn't have a diskette drive.

Solution found
In fact it was more complicated then I thought.
Another fellow had the same problem and found the cause of it.
The Thinkpad comes with one partition (hda1 in Linux terms).
There is a rapid restore function which can be installed.
It generates a hidden system folder (Windows wise)
In Linux this folder is seen as hda2.
In Linux there is also seen some unallocated space, in my case 3.9 GB
This unallocated space isn't seen in Windows and therefor I never tried to use it, thinking it might have an important role in Windows.
The Linux install, for some reason I still ignore had used this space, creating a hda3 (extended) a hda5 (ext3) a hda 6 (swap partition) and a hda7 (ext3)
From that moment on I had the problem.
I deleted these partitions and voila XP booted again.
The other fellow found out, that the behavior of XP was probably due to the creation of the Linux swap partition, as he had repeatedly the problem.
So good to know for everybody here.
