Cloning T60 Running Vista With Apricorn EZ Upgrade SATA

#1 Post by Eduard » Sat Nov 17, 2007 2:07 pm

I am new to the Forum and this is my first post. I wanted to upgrade my T60's HDD and decided to purchase an Apricorn SATA EZ Upgrade kit as I have had great success with the PATA version. I read all the info here and felt I was good to go.

There is a twist if you are using Windows Vista. The Apricorn device ships with version 9.x of EZ Gig II. It will NOT work with Vista! You must contact Apricorn Tech Support and request the upgrade to EZ Gig II. I used Apricorn® EZ Gig II® version 10.0 (build 5,114) successfully. Thanks to Joe and Mark at Apricorn for the STELLAR support!!!

The exact process I followed was:

1. Receive download link from Apricorn. Download latest version of EZ Gig II.

2. Install EZ Gig II.

3. Create Bootable Rescue Media from EZ Gig II.

4. Leave the CD in the notebook and Shutdown.

5. Install the new drive internally (inside the notebook).

6. Install the original drive into the Apricorn enclosure.

7. Plug in the USB cables.

8. Power on notebook and hit F12; select BIOS setup.

9. Enter the BIOS setup Security page and disable the Pre-Desktop Area and the security chip (if enabled). Save changes and exit.

10. Boot to the EZ Gig II CD that you made in step 3. Using the "Disk Clone" option, clone the external (original) drive to the internal (new) drive (this is opposite the procedure described in the installation guide).

11. When complete, reboot to the the BIOS setup Security page and enable the Pre-Desktop Area and the security chip. Save changes and exit.

That's it!

p.s. If you installed version 9 of EZ Gig II under Vista, you will need to manually remove it using REGEDT32 before you can install the new version. Removing it through add remove programs can cause Vista to fail. I've copied the directions below that Mark at Apricorn sent to me which I followed and worked for me. YMMV

* Delete snapman from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} -> UpperFilters

* Delete snapman and ezgmntr from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} -> UpperFilters

* Run Device Manager and delete Apricorn Image Archive Explorer

* Delete snapman, ezgmntr and ezgfsfilter from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

* Delete EZ Gig II from the following registry keys:
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apricorn\Autopart (can be absent)
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apricorn\CDRecord
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apricorn\SnapAPI
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apricorn\Snapman
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apricorn\VBus

* Delete \Windows\System32\autoprnt.exe if it exists

* Open Task Manager and stop the following processes: schedhlp.exe, ezgmntr.exe (if it is running)

* Delete the desktop icon and Start menu shortcuts
* Delete \Program Files\Common Files\Apricorn folder
* Delete \Program Files\Apricorn\EZ Gig II folder
* Delete \Program Files\Apricorn folder

* Delete the following keys in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT:
o .tib
o .tis
o tibfile (if it exists)
o tisfile (if it exists)

* Delete the following registry keys:
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\EZ GIG II
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apricorn (you may need to grant full control permission to yourself to delete this key)
o HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Apricorn

* Reboot the computer.

I hope this is helpful for anyone else considering an upgrade.

I've used Apricorn for PATA drives before and was very satisfied with it. I'll definitely remember your post when contemplating future upgrades :P
