RAM for T42p

#1 Post by Rochefort » Sun Nov 18, 2007 2:09 pm

I'm in love with my T42p 2373-WGK ;)
For Xmas I plan to give it a few extra RAM
Now it enjoys 1x512 & 1x1Gb with XP
Do you think 2x1 Gb will please it ? :)

Unless you use some RAM-hungry applications, like photoshop, don't expect much improvement. (I say that, even though my T42p has 2GB) More memory gives you better performance only if you run things that can use it. On the downside, more memory will reduce battery life and the machine will take longer to hibernate.

Thats right

br
W500 @ T9900, 7K750, 2GB ITM as TMP
now W500, W700, X301, X120e,T43p
before T23, T40, T43p*2, T61p*3 (I hate Nvidia),

I didn't think so, thanks PW.

So the best you can do is 2 X 1gb.

And, irrational as it may be, "maxed out" feeling is hard to beat... :D

Especially on a beast like T42p...

Take it from someone who routinely maxes out ALL of his personal machines...and NEVER gets his money out of them...

(That's what all the other ThinkPads in my house are for...)

You will see a difference if you do some applications that demand video power...or some serious programming/math tasks...or a bloated-enough Linux (think Fedora)...

it makes no significant changes from 1.5G ram to 2G ram.
1. T43 2668-B97 14" SXGA+ 1.5G RAM 9cells
2. X60s 1703-CA3 powerful

Harryc is selling 1 1GB PC2700 chip that would go nicely with your system. I have 2GB in my machine and i'm running Vista and yeah, it definitely helps with Vista. I'm not so sure about if it would do anything in XP but generally apps that use it will love it :)

He's a great seller and very well respected ( ;) )

Why would that be the case?

More memory historically meant less use of pagefile/hard drive and accordingly lower use of power.

If you are using applications that need all the memory, it will cut down on paging. However, you still need to keep refreshing the memory.

I've got a T42 with 1Gb of ram at it pretty much runs smoothly with Eclipse and several java services on Tomcat (that pretty much lags to death on 512mb machines). Unless it is absolutely neccesary i doubt adding more ram would improve anything, since the machine should be responsive enough.
Better check if u can get a 7200rpm hdd - should reduce software loading times a bit (i hope it's compatible with T42p (: ).
T42 14" xga, 1.6Ghz P-M 725, 1Gb 333mhz ram, 120Gb hdd, 802.11b wifi (lol) :)

frgtn,

If you look at OP's signature, you'll see that he already has a 7200rpm drive-an upgraded one, no less-and, FYI, all T42p machines have originally left the factory with 7200rpm drives...the same is true for T41p and T43p as well as for R50p...
