Networking issues

#1 Post by Uncletoad » Mon Nov 19, 2007 1:34 pm

I'm not sure where to put this in the forum but I'm struggling with networking issues with my 3 T42's.

Randomly and unpredictably they don't see each other over the network. Sometimes they all see each other, sometimes they don't.

I've got a network printer that sometimes they see, sometimes thay don't.

Usually it's not a problem I just ignore it except that soon I will be running a shared database from Quickbooks that will require networking to work well all the time. I need to fix it.

If this is out of the thinkpads.com perview anybody have suggestions where to look or who to consult?

The first thing to do would be to dump (yesterday if at all possible) simple file sharing on all machines.

The second thing to do is to ensure firewalls on all machines allow all the other machines. Usually permitting the range subnet everywhere will do it.

If that does not work, post back that you tried it, and some more details of configuration, whose firewall, etc.

Thanks for taking the time to help. I appreciate it.

Simple file sharing dumped now on all boxes.

The only firewall I'm using is the one in Windows XP pro. In exceptions on file sharing it is allowing the subnet to do all that. I don't know if I need to do something more global there. I don't know how to configure it to do specific machine permissions.

However I just turned all the Windows firewalls off and there seems to be no change.

At any rate it's still jacked up.

fwiw I have uninstalled Access Connections on all three and gone to using Windows to address the wireless network. They all see the internet just fine.

They are networked using a Dlink DI 624. The two 2373K9U machines have fairly fresh and unmolested images.

The T42p has undergone some changes since it's reimage October 10 and hit some snags like an Microsoft Error 720 that pops up when I try to use PDAnet on my smartphone to teather to the net. I don't know if that's related.
